How wide are the lines to be then ?
Lines are only reasonably wide on VAR screen so viewers can see it that way, they could just as easily reduce them to a piece of string size.
However wide you want that line to be, is the tolerance level you want to give to the attacker gaining an unfair advantage,

How inaccurate is the system? How far could the ball travel between frames? That's the width of the line.

The offside rule wasn't created to stop attackers being a couple of inches ahead of a defender. It was designed to stop goal hanging. Looking at offsides in such minute detail is harming the sport, especially when the system isn't accurate enough to make the decisions.

And I've just realized that this is the Son thread, not the VAR thread.

Actually I didn’t, thought Kane initiated the contact by making the sideways move away from ball, but can certainly see the argument for the penalty, At top referee level there was apparently roughly a 60:40 split of officials that thought it was correct not to award the penalty, so the decision not to overturn it was right as not clear and obvious, however on flip side if penalty had been given, VAR would not have overturned it either.
He moves sideways to shield the ball, which is natural and the right thing to do. He doesn't initiate contact. That's rubbish.

One of the biggest problems with VAR is watching these things back over and over in slow motion, it distorts what's going on.

And people watching it through referee eyes who are obsessed with the guidelines who have no understanding of why a player would make such a movement or the body mechanics involved with a movement and then making the judgement based on slow motion which makes every split second action look premeditated.

I can understand why they try and judge offsides with any goalscoring part of the body, but it would make it a lot easier if they just used the feet. I'd also suggest that if the offside is so tight that the two lines are touching then benefit of the doubt should go to the attacking team. The decision might go against your team, but people want to see goals in football matches and if the system isn't 100% accurate then let the goal stand.

Completely agree. For me, even if the technology was accurate enough (which primary-school level maths proves that it can't be), if it's as close as that then benefit should go to the attacker because even if they were technically offside, that tiny fraction of an inch closer to the goal that they may or may not have been has in no way given them any kind of advantage over the defender so the goal should stand.

Completely agree, they're not thinking in terms of why the rules were introduced which was to create a fair game with no unfair advantages. Instead they've become obsessed with the rule itself and trying to get the most accurate result as opposed to answering the question of is this an unfair advantage which goes against the spirit of the sport.

And will they also give us back the 2 points the coward Atkinson cost us?!! ??
No. But maybe, just maybe this will finally be the piece of luck to kickstart our season. Cos “it’s a funny ole game”!!

Exactly. The rules have been shown up as being poorly written so now they need to either change the rules slightly, or use VAR to apply the "spirit of the rule" rather than obsessing over minuscule technicalities to the Nth degree. As you say offside is there to prevent people from goalhanging essentially, so whether or not their nosehair was offside ishould beirrelevant in practice.

As wide as they show them now would be fine as I believe it takes into account the unknown factor of when the ball was actually kicked well enough, I am firmly of the belief that the benefit of the doubt should go with the attacker anyway and I understand that to be the criteria referees have previously used.

Good to see no obvious major problems from the Everton game hanging over him tonight.

Just apologised to Gomez on TV, you could tell he was genuinely remorseful, you just want to give him a hug.

Yep, love how he’s handled things since the Everton game not shying away from playing the next game butmalso the respect he’s shown towards Gomes.

On a side note I wish he was just played on the left as much more effective from that side - he’s been on right in league in recent games.

His grateful bow to the camera, demonstrated a grace that is sadly lacking throughout our society.

A genuinely triffic lad.

Interesting article on the overturned red...

The FA panel which overturned Heung-Min Son’s sending off at Everton earlier this month failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
Detailing a rare majority verdict, the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission voted two to one to overturn Martin Atkinson's sending off, after Son's tackle led to Andre Gomes suffering a fractured dislocation of his right ankle.

Controversially the commission chose not to consider the injury suffered by Gomes when reviewing Atkinson's decision.
