Haven't seen many details on the reasons why the card was rescinded, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did it based on Atkinson's actions (giving a yellow first, then a red based on crowd and player reactions) rather than the panel making a judgment call on the severity of the tackle. Still think it would have been a yellow if not for the injury though.

It shouldnt have been anything more than a yellow but apparently the consequence of a tackle can also give rise to a red card - go figure.

To be honest he may not be in any state of mind to play furthermore he certainly wont be going into any tackle in the near future - my two cents worth.

I agree, he won't tackle for a very long time. I am sure he won't play tomorrow too.

Will be interesting to see if he traveled with the team to Belgrade. Either way I hope he's doing alright mentally. Even seeing something like that is traumatic, much less being involved in how it happened.

He was totally shaken by the incident and thats just testament to what a great and nice guy he is. Hopefully with time he will acknowledge that whilst it was a poor tackle it wasnt the tackle that caused the injury

Same goes for Aurier too in all honesty - he was also shaken but think he will be alright

Has the judgement with reasoning been published anywhere?
I’m guessing it’ll be something along the lines of...

Boy, did we fuck up there, hands up, the only thing that was red was Martin Atkinson’s face after that embarrassing decision. Our bad.
Love and kisses,
The Premier League.

Fortunately common sense has prevailed, the FA who deal with disciplinary matters across all UK football have made the right decision . It was never a red card challenge in the first place just that the consequences of it resulted in a severe injury by sheer bad luck and it looks like the officials were caught out in the emotion of the moment. All the ex players that I have seen talking about it thought the red card was wrong including baby face Keown.

I'm genuinely (but pleasantly) surprised by this as I thought they'd support their own, fair play for getting it right for once.

Am I right in thinking the PL clubs are meeting soon and VAR is on the agenda? I wonder if this will affect things.

I sort of understand why Atkinson did what he did. There was a huge amount of pressure on him, a lot of emotion, and until we saw the replays it could well have been that Sonny had somehow turned Gomes's ankle. So he waves the red card. BUT the VAR ref has no pressure on him and we have been told that VAR will review every red card. As far as I know, VAR did not review that red card. If they had then it would have been overturned. I'm sure Son would still have gone off but at least we would have had 11 men.

It seems to be exactly the same as not reviewing a goal. VAR reviews key moments in a game.

This really does need an answer from the Premier League and further throws the current use of VAR into disrepute.
