I love people saying he clearly didn't touch it. I've watched the replay hundreds of times today on the huge screens at work - as SSN is on all day here. They've slowed it down, shown different angles, etc today and in the best angle it certainly looks like he at least brushes the ball with his foot before tangling with Aguero's legs. There's no "clearly" or "certainly" about it, but it will help to fuel the "rash", "braindead" "penalty waiting to happen" narrative, so it's all good.

It was needless and a little rash, but I don't want to go in too hard on Aurier because I thought he had a really good game overall.

However, I hate myself for agreeing with Jamie Carragher who sounded like he'd just impregnated the Mona Lisa when Aurier first made the challenge.
Carragher was driving me crazy with his commentary on Aurier. It took multiple re-watches of the penalty tackle to determine who touched the ball and whether there was any contact, to confirm there was minimal contact, yet throughout the whole game the spitter was calling Aurier rash even when Aurier was successfully pulling off tackle after tackle. I can see why VAR thought it was a penalty, but still it wasn't a heavy contact tackle and on that basis I'm surprised they deemed it "clear and obvious error" to overrule Dean's initial no penalty decision

Aurier should never try & tackle in those situations with the player going away from goal & no real threat to goal if he'd just shepherded him out, so it was a poor decision by him.

The problem is it's not the 1st time he's done this & if he doesn't learn by them he's a liability especially in the bigger games.

I don't think whether he touched it or not is relevant here he shouldn't make the tackle in the first place, tackling from behind is always deemed as foul no matter where it happens on the pitch.

Never stick your tackle in a fire place. Noted.

I don't see how he touches it and this is as clear an angle as you're going to get, the balls trajectory only changes when Aguero gets a touch when Aurier makes his action the ball does not change it's path of action whatsoever. Even if there was a touch, you don't really want your defenders taking risks like that when the striker is going away from the goal because the reward isn't high enough to justify the potential cost. Personally I see that action as rash, I don't see that as a narrative in a bigger picture I'm judging purely that action whether it's Alder, Vert, Sanchez, Aurier whoever but for me the action to try and make that tackle given the circumstances was a rash decision.

Carragher does that. I've heard him several times. He's made up his mind about Serge and if he does 20 positive things in a match Carragher will focus on the one thing that backs up his predetermined idea. Wanker!
For the record I think Aurier is very under rated. Good player with a rash challenge in him. There's not manyt other right backs I'd currently swap him for.

Precisely. I was adamant from the broadcast view that he got the ball.

Carragher also failed to commend the positive things Aurier did. He made a great sliding tackle towards the end of the first half. Carragher = silent.

Better add me to your list. Aurier clearly did not touch the ball.
Well the VAR video clearly showed Aurier toeing the ball away. Souness who is not pro Spurs also said Aurier got the ball and its no penalty.

I really hope we can get through to him not to be so rash in the penalty box, if we can coach that out of him then I think we have a good RB on our hands. However, he is 27 now....its the sort of decisions you expect from a younger RB and by this age, you'd expect a level of maturity and responsbility that he just seems to lack.

Having said all that, I applaud his determination since Jose came in, he does look like a different player already so maybe there is hope we can get the negativie aspects eliminated from his game.

It's a problem that's going to need solving in the summer but tbf yesterday was a 8/9 out of 10 bar the pen.

If he didn't touch it he couldn't possibly have got any closer to doing so; clear and obvious my arse.

Honestly. I turned him off after 20 mins. I could not and will not listen to that man any longer.

I don't know who he has dirt on but there is no way he is on TV talking for a living without having a video of someone high up at sky doing some pretty fucked up shit.

That's a good angle - clearly doctored footage though :cautious:. And even watching that, you still can't conclusively say he doesn't get a toe to it. As has been said though, probably a rash challenge that didn't necessarily need to be made.

If Aurier did not touch the ball can people explain how the ball moved with momentum, in the direction which can only be the result of Aurier kicking it, when auguero did not touch the ball. This angle bullshit is silly. Use science to convince me how on earth did the ball moved the way it did. Furthermore the touchline footage clearly showed Aurier toeing the ball away.
