He isn't a left back. The season Fulham got promoted go and have a look where he played, where he scored his goals and why (supposedly) half of the prems elite were looking at him.

If I was Mourinho I'd be inclined to bring Tanganga in for Aurier if I was going to use Sessegnon. That way Sessegnon would have less defensive responsibility and could gain a bit of confidence playing further up. We have the players to deploy the lopsided back 4 formation either way round.

The kid is lacking confidence and looks unsure of himself at left back. Having said that I'm happy to see him get game time as the only way he is going to develop is to play him. I'd still rather have him than Rose at the moment.

I didn't watch last night but I've always believed Sessegnon is more of a WB. I've said a few times he isn't good enough or technical with the ball at his feet imo to be a proper winger yet having watched him a lot in academy football and that didn't change when he went into Fulham's first team. His strength has always been running into space, positional awareness and decision making. He scored a hatful of goals from arriving late and making use of the space left open and people start to talk of him as some top quality winger but he wasn't going to get that space in the PL which is probably one of the reasons his numbers were a lot lower his first season in the PL.

I'm sure he'll be very good in the future especially playing with better player but he will either need to improve his defensive game and become a quality attacking FB or improve his attacking game, ie taking on players or getting past players and become a good winger, to become a top class player. Alternatively, he may just be on of those players that thrives of having to be really in-tune with his teammates. So they learn where each other will be and know each others movement, like Alli so he isn't dependent on having to create chances out of nothing, which as the season goes on could happen but I feel that we're so disjointed at the moment that's unlikely to happen

I personally dont think he is a left back and dont think he can play with Son. They kind of make the same runs in behind and yesterday a few times they kinda got in each others way.

I havent seen much of him previously but he seems to have raw ability and will take a fair bit of time to get his way into the team and play to his true ability.

I agree with the poster who said he seems unsure of himself.

He’s been forced into a position where he has to play Sessegnon there so we should expect to see nativity and errors because he needs to learn the role. We also won’t see the goals and attacking play which he showed at Fulham when he didn’t have the defensive responsibilities.

I know he is very young- but fuck going to watch him in his school play.

I think he is being asked to be conservative as two full backs charging forward is asking for trouble.

Awful, no belief, just a waste of space. Worst signing since Bentley. He's had a full season in the championship amd prem And hes Playing like a 12 year old drafted up to the seniors. Will never make it here

I wasn't sure if this was serious til I read your other post later in the thread.

You're gonna write him off a 19 year old after a few games in his first season with us after being out injured for the whole of pre season/beginning of the season and a managerial change in a team that's struggling?

Come on dude! I get he's been playing within himself but you have to at least give him til he's in his 20s and had a full pre season with the same coach etc before you make such ridiculous statements as he'll never make it here.

Yes he's not tearing up trees with his performances yet but there's been enough glimpses to know there's a player in there. Bayern away when he actually started where son has been playing he did really well, got his goal and then when we lost control of the game due to no central midfield he played a few loose passes and that's when he got told to keep the ball better and since then he's played much safer. He just needs to get his confidence back and be played further up the pitch to push on to better things

Only an idiot would write off a 19yr old after just a few games at a new club.

Sessegnon was always going to be a work in progress... anyone thinking differently was fooled. We won’t see the best of him consistently yet but I do feel he has great potential.

Sess is a player who beats his man off the ball with his movement.

The rest of the players need to recognise this.

In fact I think all our players tend to take too many touches and it really pisses me off.

I am not going to say Sessegnon can't become a good player in the future, but I would be surprised if it happens. As a winger his off the ball movement is atrocious. It is amazing how often he will kill the space he might run into too early. Every single time. And then he just stands there hiding behind the full back. When he on a rare occasion actually receives the ball he can't really do anything with it one on one. He isn't a winger that can with trickery get passed players. He might kick it passed someone and just run, but how often will a winger playing for Spurs end up in that situation? Most teams defend fairly deep against us. He really is only useful when he can chase down a ball or finish with his left.

As a left back the off the ball movement when we are in possession is less of an issue. He gets to use his pace more both when we got the ball and when we are defending. He also hits the ball sweetly so I could see him becoming a good crosser. To me the only downside of him playing as a full back is that he won't be able to use his solid finishing as often as he would have as a winger.

I hope I'm wrong. He seems like a nice kid. And he obviously has some interesting qualities in his pace and how he hits the ball. He also got some vision. Even if he isn't exactly Bergkamp he did play some nice passes occasionally for Fulham. So he is not a lost case, but for me he is just a promising young player. And most promising young players won't make it. I don't see him being special (oh I hope that comes back and bites me).

Funny how I wrote my post at the same time as you - arguing the complete opposite. I hope you are right and I am wrong.

So far in a Spurs shirt you are probably right but from his Fulham days he is a player who relies on a give and go rather than beating a man with pace or skill. Wing back would probably suit him best but playing with Lo Celso and Ndombele will bring the best out of him imo.

"Reminds me of Bale when we could never win when he was in the team

Bale play as LB was just as bad . He was confused . Instinct was to attack but have to sit back and defend . Sess is facing the same thing now

Think we only see Sess reach his potential once we get a LB

Sess was put in to counter Aarons speed cause Japhet just could not handle the speedy winger in the Watford game

Tactically it was right but with Son in front of him he is never gonna get much help so not surprise to see him struggle"

How does he remind you of Bale!?- who scored three in his first four games or something. Bale may have had defensive faults but he was fast and dynamic. Sess is passive and showing no enterprise etc. Thought he would be much better. Hope he will get confident and transform himself into a player of use to the team.

They said "Reminds me of Bale when we could never win when he was in the team" which was in his second season (when he was 19, same as Sess is now). That season, Bale got 0 goals and 3 assists in all comps, in 2000 mins of which 24 were starts. Sessegnon in comparison, has 1 goal and 1 assist so far in 600 mins of which 7 have been starts.

In Bales first season, before his injury, he was confident and fearless, but in his second season he was timid and nervous, just like Sessegnon is now.

This is true. In fact I remember people on here saying Bale ‘lacked pace’ at this time. Fucking hell SC ?

Absolutely this.

When he is in the left wing position just watch him. His movement is incredibly clever for his age. Once Ndombele and Lo Celso are permanent starters in this team I think we’ll see him in some great positions to score or set up goals.

His decision making and quality of delivery is also very, very good. We won’t see it unless we play the passes though.
