For these young players with big price tags and expectations it’s a lot of pressure. Who was the last player under 22 we bought that really hit the ground running ? Dier and Dele maybe but they were cheap buys. Just look at Bale as the prime example.

Davinson Sánchez?

One naive tackle and people are losing their minds. He's been a bit timid, but he's showing significant promise. His crossing is great and we know he'll be scoring goals once he settles. He's 19 and to claim he's not worth 25m is frankly insane.

I've wanted him at the club since the u17 world cup where he was a stand out player, probably only out shone by Sancho who left early to play for Dortmund. Foden, Brewster, CHO, they're all the same age and all still forcing their way into top first teams.

Have maybe even a modicum of patience.

Jury is out for me. Always seemed a bizarre signing as he was incredibly poor last season. Lets hope he can develop further, but still think LB is an area that we need to address.

He can ONLY if he learns how to defend, beefup or strengthen up, not be brushed aside off the ball by opposition player breathing on him, if he can stop being afraid and meek .... its a big ask or masive massive learning he needs to do in a very short period of time.

Lets be honest offensively which is his key attributes he has been literally non existent, he doesnt look like a small fish in a big pond, he looks like a single krill in the ocean atm. this is purely on what he has showed so far , i was very excited by his signing and really want him to do well but he has literally shown us nothing at all.
mate he's 19!!! chill out on him. He's better and more experienced than 99% of 19yr olds are at that age.

Looked absolutely shite so far, and last season. Looked pretty decent a couple of years back though.

Could go either way I think. I was surprised we took such a punt after he failed to make the step up, but fingers crossed we can coax a player out of him

Just to add to this, as I've stated before on another thread he is always looking to make runs off the ball, and he is looking for one-twos with the forward players.

This has never materialized on the pitch, the ball always ends up back in the middle or on the right and it drives me insane.
You're absolutely right. Watch Liverpool and how Salah and Mane are always making runs into channels, and teammates instinctively know where to pass the ball into space behind the defensive line without looking up. Ryan is making those runs but teammates a) haven't picked up on the runs b) not got the confidence/ability to play the pass. Once the team get to know each other better and work out how to best play the ball to each other, Ryan will start delivering on his potential. For now he's gaining experience defensively and working hard for the team. And I'd much rather celebrate his team effort than watch him get frustrated and try to force his attacking principles - we've got too many players like Moura and Son, who don't pick their head up enough and focus on their individual abilities

Tony Gale kept on raving about him being an attacker, but in all I've seen he looks only like an attacker in the Dele sense, as in timing of runs into the box. I think he's naturally intelligent and already has a good level of athleticism. Employ a sports psychologist to give him the mental boost he needs and he'll be fine.

Patience yes, but this is a player with 3 seasons of senior football already under his belt.
His timidity and fear is screaming from his body language and actions. Question over mentality, is my worry.
9 out of 10 passes over the half way line are safe 5-8yard passes backward and square.
He's miles away from deserving a starting berth. Signs are not at all good so far. Let's hope that changes.

I think we should be prepared to give him some time. He arrived late in the summer window, struggled with injury and is only starting to get a run of games. He's got all the physical attributes and has the added bonus of being goalscorer (albeit, at a lower level).

Not sure what your expectations were for Sessegnon, but I don't think he's had a proper chance to really prove himself yet.

This reminds me of a similar situation involving a young left back/winger we signed a couple of years ago... Had a decent goalscoring record, had the strength and pace required for the position, but really struggled at the start of his time here. Some people were really questioning why we bought him. Tough time for him. Of course, like RS, he'd previously spent his entire short professional career up to that point with a 'smaller team' than the mighty Spurs.... Wonder what happened to that kid from Southampton?

We signed Atouba from Basel not Southampton

Sess signed on the basis that Poch would be manager and probably be able to bring him on as a player.

Does Jose offer the same promise? He's definitely being instructed to play more cautiously - but his confidence isn't there yet.

I'd like him to be given time, and by that I mean one to two years.

Patience.

Good post. I agree.
He's promising and may turn out well, in time.
He should absolutely not be starting big games at present.
Not writing off his prospects, but he has been poor so far, and more should be expected of a senior signing than being one for the future.

You’re bang on the money but I think it’s more of a hit to his confidence than frustration if you look at his demeanor when this happens. He is so eager and willing to help the team but he is being ignored by Dele, Son and on occasion Winks and yet we have people here questioning his mentality and confidence.

I’ve been so impressed by the kid for what he’s contributed so far, but that extra 20% from his teammates will make the world of difference and we will really see Ryan come into his own when it clicks.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt as the whole team is in a bit of a slump at the moment, but it’s something that needs to be addressed so we can get the best out of BOTH wings. Sometimes it’s like there’s a big red dot on Aurier when we push the ball out wide in our attack, and we are getting found out. We need both wings to be effective.

Any idea what is happening with Sess? Not getting on the bench even for the recent matches

Is he injured or just did he pissed off Jose?

I'm no expert in body language but I keep getting the feeling that Sess isn't fully integrated with the other players. Paranoia maybe.

I'm really not sure what to make of him as of yet. It could really be down to confidence as that is so crucial, but he is really struggling. Tonight should have been a good opportunity with the freedom of LWB but, I felt, he still struggled to get involved. Granted, our whole team was a shitshow and looked like they had never played together before.
