I'm interested in what happens if someone vindictively uses racial slurs, real targeted evil shit. N-word, gas chambers etc etc. What type of ban would they be looking at - 25 / 30 / 40 games? Multiple seasons? Whatever you think of the idiocy of what RB said, it's surely at the dumbo end of the spectrum rather than overt racism with intent to harm.
While it would be great to see zero tolerance actually enacted, with lifetime bans, the courts probably wouldn't allow it. Clubs could choose to dismiss a player, but it would be hard to prevent another club taking the player on.

It seems a bit of a needless endeavour if the minimum length of the ban is 6 games I can’t see them reducing it to less than that. Even then I’d not be surprised if we get hit with additional games for this being a “frivolous” appeal to make an example of us. Not saying it’s a conspiracy, it’s just we’ve offered them up a chance on a plate to do so.

Means he'd be availible for Liverpool game though.

If the appeal takes as long as the original decision did, his contract might run out before the ban comes into effect!

I just don't think the FA should be sticking their oar into this at all. If it was during a football match, that they purport to organise and officiate... fine. But an off season TV show in another country?

Nothing to do with them. Pure performative.

Does appealing mean he is still available to play?
Pretty sure I read that as it didn't happen related to anything FA has anything to do with, it's not within their jurisdiction to allow him to play pending the appeal.

We’re only appealing the length so would imagine ban still kicks in immediately. The FA then have 6 games time to decide whether the appeal is successful, if not the 7th match still applies.

Agreed, which is why he only got 7 games. The shortest van would have been 6, so it's just one up from that.

I can see it now, he leaves end of the season and a fan of the other club questions how the suspension works. It will be like Bassong all over again.

Unless I’m missing something, the guidelines for a ban are 6-12 matches. So only 5 games more for one of your examples.
Now they are guidelines so you’d like to think something horrific - John Terry to Anton Ferdinand for example - would see the guidelines thrown away and a stronger punishment applied. But this is the FA so who knows

I understand why people might think the ban is excessive but that is a debate for another time. The fact that Enzo Fernandez has gotten away with his appalling behaviour because he was protected by international duty is both a damning indictment of football’s stupid governing bodies, and also completely irrelevant to Bentancur’s case.
People keep saying this but it's still under investigation, he may well still be punished.

The punishments need to be consistent between governing bodies though, if the same offence is committed then the same punishment should apply.

Welp, I was wrong that I thought that we wouldn't appeal this, but still think I'm right about us being stupid to do so.

Another case of the club not reading the room imo.

I think people are making too much of it - there really is no downside here.

I suspect that the club may simply be using the system to time the suspension - potentially putting it off until next season, if the appeal drags on long enough.

The Club have accepted the violation, they are not arguing that it was wrong - just that the punishment is not appropriate for the offense.

And, missing nearly 20% of the season for a comment like Bentancur's does seem excessive - and also does not really address the underlying problem.
