Yep. FA have already said it’s a fifa matter not domestic as it happened on international duty
As did Bentancur's interview. I'm confused why the FA are involved in this when it should be between the Uruguayan Football Association and FIFA. As well as Spurs, but they have already commented on the issue and, presumably, moved on - months ago now.

I haven't got a problem with him receiving a ban of some kind, but why did the FA get involved? It happened outside of the club and premier league season. Wouldn't it be a FIFA matter in that case?

Not like it's an unknown fact that it's more difficult to recognize faces of ethnicities you have had little contact with.

He should have known better than to say it, but it's also a reality for most South Americans.

Oh please. Let’s not excuse his behaviour. The guy said something ignorant/stupid/racist. Now it’s right he faces the consequences of his actions.

Given the amount of targeted racist abuse Son has received from opposing fans over the years it’ll be deeply ironic that the first person to suffer any form of consequence is one of his own teammates for making a joke (albeit a terrible one).

Regardless of whether or not Bentacur should suffer any punishment, it underlines that the FA are spineless ****s when it comes to dealing with poor fan behaviour.

A Palace fan and a Chelsea fan were given three year bans from attending games for racist abuse against son. So people have been punished

I got a lot of negs when my comments was on the line, thst he is an absolute fckng idiot, and deserves whatever he gets. Absolute moronic racism. Let’s not beat carrots bush.
This has got to be the best "Herc" ever and must now become a thing! 🤣

But although it's taken too long, it's only right that Bents gets some form of punishment for being so stupid.
3 or 4 games should suffice, anything more would be overkill in my opinion and let's hope that the FA treat other cases in the same way.

I don't believe that he meant any harm but he should know better.

Some of the posts in this thread have annoyed me if I'm honest. Some people are claiming that people are defending racism which is utter nonsense. You can suggest that a 6-10 game ban sounds excessive when compared to other bans over the years but also agree that Bentancur was stupid, made a mistake and deserves to be punished. It's what the punishment should be is where some people differ. Nobody is defending racism here at all.

Not in any way condoning what he said, but its the 'punishment' thing that annoys me. Being banned from playing is not a significant punishment for Bents, is it? He is not being suspended without pay. He is not being fined tens of thousands of pounds. But as we will be without a key first team player for a number of games, it is the club that is being punished for something that happened in a non-club context.

Bentancur should absolutely be punished. I am just struggling to understand why the FA decided to get involved when it wasn't even during the club season.

It is frustrating that the club ends up paying for Bentancur’s stupidity, but the most effective way of punishing a player will always be to ban him from playing. Exactly as we did to Bissouma even though that also impacted the club as well.

Players will always fear losing their place more than cash fines etc. of course I would prefer that he be banned from international games though!

As far as Son receiving far more spiteful racism from opposition fans during practically every game, well that makes these comments from Bentancur even more stupid and thoughtless.

Fair enough. That’s a drop in the ocean though, the wider point still stands.

The FA are happy to apply a sporting sanction for the behaviour of an individual player who was not acting in the capacity of a Tottenham player, but there have been no sporting repercussions whatsoever for the appalling behaviour of certain fan bases at EPL games (gas noises, singing about tragedies, etc).

I’m not saying the two are directly comparable, nor am I making any excuses for Bentancur, but the latter is a scourge on the Premier League and the FA does nothing to address it.

Sorry but there is absolutely not any demand for racism and there is an alarmingly increasing level of supply.

I agree that there needs to be common sense around what the punishment is but this sort of generalisation does sound more like a defence than anything else even when you say 'not condoning but'
Racism on the increase? I would seriously question that. And I'm in a mixed race marriage, with mixed race children.

I don't want to get into a debate on this, as I'm sure we're all pulling the same direction - what it feels like though, and what I meant, is that some people seem more intent on stoking the flames when actually, dampening them would be the right thing to do.

Bentancur said something very stupid. Absolutely. And he needs to understand why.

Was it malicious in the way that some racism is/can be? I would argue not, and so there needs to be a common sense approach taken to the type of reprimand.
