If you’re genuinely interested I can recommend some books for further reading, DM if you want.
Yes please.

I am not trying to wind anyone up or down play racism but when I enter my question into google about the line on all Asian people or Chinese people looking the same - the results and discussions (Quora/Reddit) seem to indicate that it isn’t technically racist but very very ignorant.

Even though I agree with you that the world has changed and not excusing racist jokes or banter. We didnt all grow up in the same world. I've been subject to enough racist abuse in my life to know the difference between someone being aggressive, malicious and discriminatory and someone trying to get a cheap laugh who is ignorant to the impact their joke has on the subject of their joke. By your post it looks like you understand the difference too.

Unfortunately, when you're exposed to social media and complete strangers with the tendency to default to shock and outrage the answer is always "he's vile and should never breathe again".

There's a lack of education and awareness that comes with making those types of jokes that cancelling someone won't help with. Ideally you'll want to educate people who don't know better and cancel the people trying to hurt others.
The point I probably didn't really make, was that Sonny has the ability to diffuse it. Given his stardom and influence. Besides, I doubt the throw away, inappropriate comment of a footballer will likely cause public outcry in Korea anyway? Or even any particularly hurt feelings. Especially given the swift (and rightly so) grovel to Son.

Some learning and self reflection for Rodrigo. Lacing sons boots for a month, Job done. I'd imagine a few in the squad will probably have a word also.

What else is meant to be done? Public flogging? Terminate contract? Sell him!

Or accept people say and do stupid shit sometimes and need to understand the offence they could cause.

Why should Sonny intervene? Maybe he is offended. Rodrigo should take ownership of his own actions.

Not defending racism at all - and the context does change as he’s in front of a camera and should know better.

That being said, my wife is Asian and I’m very sensitive about this as I see a lot of racism against Asian people in the workplace - but being honest if people put a camera on me 24/7 they’d find plenty of out of context comments and jokes that look just as bad as this.

Sonny and Bentancur are very close, the only person who will know if this comment is harmless or not is Son.

It's not just aimed at Son though!

It doesn't set a good example at all. Far from it. But clearly cultural differences (oh the irony) about what is and is not acceptable, based on experience and education also come into play.

I just think it would be best dealt with as an education piece. In which Bentancur can learn and as a result, others also.

It is poor. It's stupid. It's probably racist (if he actually meant they look the same), but it isn't irrecoverable and it can be made into a positive. As opposed to a lynching.

The difference here. Is how Son reacts and the wider fan base.

What do you mean by probably! It is racist. If you or I made a comment like that in the work place am sure be a meeting with HR!

For me it's just poor and shows a lack of respect for his team mate and our fans and would not be bothered if he was let go.
Yes he was brought up in a different place where racism was OK however he has moved out of that place. Its also not just a Sonny issue as he is taking the piss out of a wider race.

not sure why you're acting like a child? I'm genuinely engaging with you about this, if you don't want to engage any further fair enough i'm just curious to the uproar. God Bless
You're not engaging. Your posts are trying to make out saying all Korean people look the same isn't a racist comment. My favourite by you was when you tried claiming we don't understand South American humour like this type of joke is specific to that area.

Your posts are shit and not worthy of any respect, and not just on this subject either.

my first post about South American humour is that this is very common to the area. It's deep rooted, it's a specific genre of comedy that i don't think is going to change anytime soon.

if you find my posts shit then that's cool. tbh I find it more intriguing that'd you'd even remember them, I barely post. Regardless, like yourself, I still treat every single comment in here with respect.

Honestly, I wish the best for you. You have no idea what anybody on here is going through so to claim you don't have respect for what someone says is truly upsetting. God Bless
