Oscar Mingueza has had an excellent start to the season, ranked as 8th best player in La Liga by SofaScore stats. More solid defender than Peter Porro's attacking style.
Looks like he trails Porro in almost every defensive metric on Sofascore: https://www.sofascore.com/player/co...layerSeasonId=61643&rightPlayerTournamentId=8 and with a lower overall rating to boot.

Fewer tackles, interceptions, clearances, blocks and % ground duels won.

Hopefully he gets a look in anyway as imo he deserves it. There is nothing that he doesn't do for us and I don't know what we would even look for for ourselves in this position that would be better than Porro.

Was Porro not one of those at fault for the first goal?

He let his player run in behind him didn't he letting him cross?

pretty much all their attacking threat came down his side, mitoma had him on toast the whole game. He was left isolated 1 v1 constantly, Johnson needed to help out or kulu but no one did

Johnson is quite lazy to get across defensively.

But Porro for the first goal was atrocious.

We miss Sissoko in those type of situations. He always would get across and help the fullbacks. If we're going to keep wide players high up the pitch we need 2 central midfielders so one can get across and help. I think as Sarr develops he can do that role.

PEDRO PORRO: "I'M EXCITED ABOUT REAL MADRID'S INTEREST; NOW I'M READY TO MAKE A LEAP LIKE THIS"

The Tottenham side is playing for a place with Mingueza in the National Team, where he returns to forget his slip: "I look at the careers of Navas and Carvajal and say 'I'm shit'."

Updated October 9, 2024, 9:30 pm

Pedro Porro (Don Benito, Badajoz, 1999) is easily recognizable in Las Rozas these days despite the fact that the Absolute and the Sub-21 share facilities and there are too many people dressed in the same clothes. It is that cannon that is floating, like a child on Three Kings Day, who does not stop smiling as if he were in the Amusement Park. The Tottenham side has returned to the calls after being left out of the Euro Cup and does so with the certainty that this time he has entered through the door to stay.

Carvajal's injury is not that he has allowed him to count for De la Fuente. He was already included in the call before his serious injury. The option that is now open to him, with the Madrid player recovering, is nothing more and nothing less than that of the title. After his time at Girona, his transfer to Valladolid and his consecration in Portugal, in the Premier League he is showing that he no longer only attacks like a possessed, but also defends like a lion. He speaks with the illusion of a young man and the reed of a veteran. Without clichés or dribs, and with the audacity he shows in the field and on social networks.

What are your first feelings in this return to the Red?

I'm very happy. Happy to be here again. It's always a huge pride.

You were looking forward to leaving the weather in London to see the sun of Madrid... and you have brought us the storm.

[Laughs] Don't see. What bad luck. But not even that tarnishes this great moment.

How uneasy were you for not coming to the National Team lately?

Obviously, you are always aware of the lists. And always what I have said: if at that moment it was not my place, it simply remained to continue working. I'm a kid who also knows what the National Team is. I was lucky enough to spend many years with Luis in the U21. Now I'm feeling better on the subject of defense and I'm very happy.

It's good that you bring out the topic of debate yourself of whether you attack better than you defend. Did it hurt you to stay out of the Euro Cup, since you were in one of the last friendlies, or did you expect it?

I was waiting for the list with my partner to go to the Euro Cup. It's like that. But we had two laterals that are very good, for me the best in history, and you put yourself a little in their place and say 'you have to wait.' I was excited, as I put it then on my social networks. But... I followed the National Team as one more from home and it went well for us.

Are you at your best now?

I would say yes. Since I was at the Sporting Club of Portugal. I'm feeling much better and that's important.

What do you think you've improved the most?

Defensively. I have put a lot of emphasis there and I have had to defend a lot. The Premier is very one-on-one and I have worked well on it. The coach we have works especially on that, and thanks to that work I have improved.

You're going to play the position these days with Mingueza. Would you have signed to be here, not playing for a minute as it happened to you other times and seeing Carvajal as a starter on Saturday?

That question is very difficult... I preferred to come here and that Dani is there because inside the locker room he gives us a lot too. Inside the field we already know that he is the best. I would say that I preferred to come here and not play for a minute and that Carvajal was with us.

"I preferred to come here and not play for a minute and that Carvajal was with us"

The injuries are being a scourge. Do you get to play obsessed or afraid of falling?

I'm a player who doesn't think like that. If I have to give 200% I will give 200%. And if I'm not, I'm not. I'm like that. There are players who can have those thoughts in their heads, and with everything that is happening it is normal, but it is not my case. I try to take care of myself day by day. It's the main thing.

Pedro Porro: "I would prefer to come to the National Team and not play for a minute and that Carvajal was with us."Salvador Fenoll

You, fortunately, have not had long-term injuries. Good luck or work?

Well, each person has a body... Some will say it's luck and others, work. What I do tell you is that I work a lot. After the games I have my injury prevention and I do my strength work. It's key. It is very important to recover well, since there are many games. Be focused to activate yourself again. I take it well and I like it. In this case, for my part, I would say that it is the result of work.

Do you stop to think about the turns that life takes, how fast everything goes and what you have achieved with only 25 years old? I'll give you an example: in 2020 you were a substitute in Valladolid and look where you are, and the lateral who played, captain Javi Moyano, plays in Third RFEF...

Buff... You talk to me about that and I get goosebumps. You don't stop to think. That's the truth. And time passes very quickly. Just three days ago I was talking to Javi Moyano because I get along great with him. And he tells me. For me it is a huge pride to see me here. At that time Sergio [by Sergio González, his coach in the 2019-2020 season] thought that he was the captain and that he had to play everything. And I respected him. He was also very young. If you stop to think you say wow! It seems like it was yesterday and that was a few years ago already. I love Javi very much, he played more and I was at the foot of the canyon.

If you crossed paths with Sergio now, what would you say to him?

I have no problem with him. I think it was the following year when we crossed paths, if I remember correctly, I greeted him, we were talking and well. If he decided at that time that Javi had to play, I had no problem, I started training like one more and that's it.

Do you have the thorn that City bought you but you didn't have the opportunity to play under Guardiola's orders?

Yes. Especially for what I could have learned. I was very young. Life is like this: one day you are there, another you are somewhere else and now I am where I am, and very happy. And I want to continue like this.

You who are very sincere: How many times have you thought about that cursed slip of Scotland last year? [The National Team lost its first match with De la Fuente (2-0) after a massive rotation in which there was a defensive mistake of his]

Many. Many. I emphasized that a lot. I was reviewing the last games with the National Team. I like to see my mistakes. Although I don't call it an error, because it can happen to anyone that you slip... I was also watching the game against Colombia and I focus a lot on correcting. That also makes me feel like a better person and a better player. I looked a lot that I had the easy pass for the center, that I wanted to turn around... That's how mistakes are improved.

A curiosity about that first defeat of the De la Fuente Era for which there was then a revolution in the next call: I wanted to know what kind of tacos you played with that day and if that incident has even made you change your boots.

He was wearing aluminum studs. I always play with aluminum.

You'd better. Some coaches can't see their defenses with rubber studs...

I, always aluminum. I always look at everything. I get up every morning to improve, I am a player who always wants more and that I take care of even the smallest detail. You don't have to get stuck in what you do well. I am a very sincere player who says things as they are. I still have a lot to improve. I am 25 years old. I look at Jesús Navas' career and I look at Dani Carvajal's and say 'I'm shit'. It's true. If you tell me the careers they have had... I say, well, I'm on the right track. I hope one day it will be like them because for me they are idols.

Pedro Porro: "I look at Navas and Carvajal's races and say 'I'm shit'."Salvador Fenoll

What does Luis de la Fuente tell you, what does Luis de la Fuente ask you and what do you think he is watching you the most?

I always have that approach with Luis. We have a good relationship and I think he will look at me more on the defensive issue. It's normal. Luis knows, and I also know, that we can say things to each other's faces without any problem. Surely he's watching me, because he hasn't seen me here for a long time, even though he sees me at the games in England.

"Luis and I know that we can say things to each other's faces without any problems. Surely he is watching me more in defense and I have improved"

But although you must improve in defense, you cannot neglect one of your greatest virtues, the attack. Is it true that you have agreed with your representative [Toni Pla] a figure of 10 goals this season? You have 1...

Yes, yes, yes, there's something like that. I have a fight there with him [laughs]. I hope it reaches that figure, but it's not easy. The best thing is to be able to improve a little more every day

Do you think it has hurt you that many times you have played in your teams in 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 systems and not with a line of four behind as De la Fuente likes?

Yes. Now I've been playing in defense of four for a year and a half and I'm feeling very comfortable, getting better and better. I'm learning new things because I've always played five and I'm liking it. I insist a lot on those things that I didn't know before.

What is the turning point in your career?

I'm still missing something. The three years I was in Portugal gave me that plus. I came from a very complicated year and I was able to do it very well. Now I feel like a fulfilled player, getting better and better. The Premier also gives you that experience. I had already played Champions, but it's not the same, it gives you more experience because every weekend you have to be at 200%.

For how young you are, you have moved a lot. Now you've established yourself in Tottenham and you're leaving. Do you think you needed, above all, a stability of several years in a club after so many comings and goings?

Yes. I was in Girona for a couple of years and then I quickly went to Valladolid to play another season. Until I leave for Portugal, where I have been for two and a half years. Now, at Tottenham, I have settled down and that's good. I've always been on one side or the other. It's part of soccer and you have to be prepared at all times for what's coming. Now I'm more focused and comfortable.

Well, if you continue like this, I have the feeling that you will continue to move even though you have a contract in London until 2028... What do you feel when clubs like Real Madrid are interested in you?

It fills you with excitement, doesn't it? You have to be focused on your work, but well, that Real Madrid is interested in you is because you are doing things right. That's how I think about day to day. Well, if that moment has to come, it will come. And if he doesn't make it, well, to continue working as before.

Inevitably, the association of your career with that of Carvajal will accompany you. In the National Team the door of ownership has been opened to you and in Madrid, because as it happens to Lucas, Dani is already an age and he has little white left... Do you look ready to take a leap in the future being so young?

Yes. Obviously yes, because as I told you, I try to work and give my best on a daily basis. If I have the opportunity to make that leap tomorrow, I will be prepared for that very thing. I will have much more experience. If you had told me this years ago, I would have told you that I wasn't. Because I'm sincere. Let's see what happens.

Pedro Porro: "I'm excited that Real Madrid notices me."Salvador Fenoll

You already know the city. Because you lived in Madrid.

Yes, when I was at Rayo Vallecano.

Where did you live?

In Vallecas, on Avenida de Albufera.

In an apartment or in a residence?

In a floor, with more players.

And how is the city? Do you like it?

Good, good, yes. I have always loved Madrid. On top of that, in the last break I was here too. I was at the Zoo. It's a city that I love.

Good place to create content on social networks, where by the way I always see you very active. Do you manage your accounts personally or does someone take them from you?

I have a communication team. They're funny and we take things out there sometimes... I have a fight with them... [laughs].

Which networks do you like the most?

Well, sometimes I go on TikTok and also on Twitter. I'm out there a lot. I like to read my failures, I like to read the compliments... They take almost everything from me and I already got rid of that. I had my years on social networks, but not now.

It's a good opportunity then for you to clarify if the stick you gave to Rabiot in the Euro Cup, after he threw a dart at Lamine Yamal and then he scored a great goal against France, you did it or it was a harvest of your communication agency.

No, I gave it to him, I gave it to him [laughs]. But well, he caught me like that and nothing happens. I had said things, I don't know if it was true or false, and I answered.

"I have a team that manages my social networks but I gave the 'stiche' to Rabiot"

What is clear is that not everyone takes it like you not being on a list for the Euro Cup and then already, in the middle of the championship, thus defend the colors as if you were playing.

You want to see those games, because I have been in this family and I have suffered with them. But... There were some that I didn't see because I'm a guy who lives soccer a lot and any failure or anything eats me inside. And I was more on vacation. I did see the last part of the Euro Cup and I lived it as one more. And the final caught me already training and we celebrated it at home. More, my cook came with the flag and everything. It was great to see our National Team win another title.

Good luck and enjoy now that you're inside again.

Thank you very much. See you in Murcia

To me that doesn’t sound any different. Just adds that he is focused on Tottenham whilst he’s here. Certainly doesn’t shut the door. The original quotes are from a video interview I believe which is attached to the interview I posted above. If you click on the link you can see them. Obv they are in Spanish tho so doesn’t help much.

Any of our players would jump at the chance to go to Madrid if they had the opportunity.

We’d be deluded to think otherwise.

Whether they are willing to pay X amount though is another story.

Until someone invents a button that atomises RM and Barca (hurry about it someone) then pretty much every club on the planet, even the likes of Bayern and Juve occasionally, will simply have to live with the reality that is not being RM or Barca and having players they want.

Yeah. I'm rarely moved by this sort of thing nowadays.

While they extended Carvajal's contract, they will surely go big on that position (possibly Trent) before the summer of 2026, which is the earliest we will even consider a sale, i.e. with 2 years left on his deal.

Completely agree with you. Harry was/is Spurs through and through and lived every fan's dreams. We can't let his departure cast a shadow over the good times he gave us. Will always be welcome back at the Lane.

With all that said, I'll take Maddison over Winks any day now. :sneaky:
