I just want to gauge the general sentiment around Mikey's development. Does anyone realistically feel he should be making the bench for all of our 1st team games?

I can't see whose spot on the bench that he takes at the moment and I'm guessing his main developmental minutes this season will come from U21 football, 1st team cup games and the odd PL game.

That feels like the right level of exposure for a 17 year old, as he'll still get more than enough competitive minutes with the U21s, while training with the 1st team and featuring in our cup games.
I think he trains with the 1st team. Makes the bench in Cup and Europa this fall.

He might make some U21 appearances, but there won’t be much development opportunities there - his development will be focused on playing against bigger/stronger opponents- which he won’t get in the U21s, but will in training.

Depending on how he progresses, he could see some PL benches late in the season.

Foden at 17 , on the bench in PL a few times but only got a few minutes . Man City had the luxury of being able to give him miniutes when well ahead in a match , we are rarely in that situation, I'm sure Ange and coaching staff will know what's best for Mikey's development.

rooney was great but if he had lived like Ronaldo he would have had a far longer career
Agree but the discussion was more around whether his early start was a signifcant factor in his relatively early fall off.

Foden didn't have the size and physicality of Mikey. The two are not comparable for that reason alone.

He still needs to develop a lot physically imo. He’ll get bullied by premier league defenders in much the same way Bryan Gil did. Like Gil, he has the skills to be effective in bits and bobs, but he’s still very slight.

We want him to maintain his confidence and positive attitude too, getting bullied week in week out by more physically imposing opponents won’t do that.

He should play u21 football at the weekends and maybe Europa cameos in midweek. Keep him hungry and motivated, but don’t stunt his growth. He still needs to be regularly playing 90 minutes and learning his game.

People really need to remember that he’s only just turned 17 and has a lot of growing to do. He’s a really exciting prospect though.
He is physically ready now, that's actually one of the things that sets him apart from the youth, he is a big lad physically, like a 16/17 year old Rooney

Good point , even now Foden is older Mikey can match him physically, according to some sources Foden height 1.71 m , weight 70kg, Mikey height 1.8 m weight 75 kg.
Physically at the moment Mikey is very similar in height and weight to both Skippy and Biss.

That's being quite dismissive of the U21 level, which is a good primer for young athletes to get used to some of the intensity, workload and expectations of becoming a 1st team player.

If you're really saying that, then you'd essentially be stating that the likes of Donley and Lankshear etc didn't benefit from the U21's.

I feel Mikey needs a full season at that level of football to show that he can deal with the rigors and challenges of facing older players, which U21 provides.

Fortunately, he can get the best of all worlds. Feature for the U21's, train with the 1st team and get minutes in the cup/odd PL game.

With the depth of our squad elsewhere I'm not sure there is space for him on the bench at the moment.

As someone else suggested earlier in this thread he should stick with the u21s for now and hopefully get a few minutes in Europe.

Yeah, that makes the most sense to me.

Especially now that Yago Santiago has moved back to Spain, that means there's an open LW spot in the U21's that is tailor made for Mikey to step into and really dominate over the course of a season.

He’ll be a part of the first team, he is currently one of 4/5 wingers, and he’s so ready.

He probably won’t make many benches in the PL. Too many players ahead of him. Best case for him is to be part of the match day squad as an extra player. He should be making the bench for Cup and Europa though.

who?

i would say his better than mannor, Gil I know his gone

I would argue his played better than Timo and Johnson pre season

20 minutes to go you need a goal, bervile, gray and Moore are coming on

rubgy has become a bench game, I could see hs having finishers this season to keep up the energy

he was also injured a lot last season so he must be insanely talented to come back at just 16 at make the first team

plus his a completely unknown teams won’t expect to play against him 0f know much about

9 spots on the bench. If everyone is healthy, he is not making it. Sorry.

GK, Spence, Dragusin, Davies, Richi, Werner, BJ/Kulusevski, Bergvall/Sarr, Bentancur/Bissouma.

That's fair - possible to imagine him on the bench for some cup games, depending on how we get on in them.

We got knocked out of the carabao in the first round last season, and we got city in the 4th round of the fa cup so chances are we go further in those. On top of that we play at a minimum 8 games in the EL. He will play even if we don’t get injuries. We could easily play 60 games this season.
