I have no idea how best his development is dealt with ? Do you leave him with the first team constantly now ?
He still needs to develop a lot physically imo. He’ll get bullied by premier league defenders in much the same way Bryan Gil did. Like Gil, he has the skills to be effective in bits and bobs, but he’s still very slight.

We want him to maintain his confidence and positive attitude too, getting bullied week in week out by more physically imposing opponents won’t do that.

He should play u21 football at the weekends and maybe Europa cameos in midweek. Keep him hungry and motivated, but don’t stunt his growth. He still needs to be regularly playing 90 minutes and learning his game.

People really need to remember that he’s only just turned 17 and has a lot of growing to do. He’s a really exciting prospect though.

don't want to leave a disagree but i just don't get what people are seeing when they say he's slight, mikey would absolutely body bryan.

as i said in the youth thread, i feel like we're so used to seeing players like tom carroll and ryan mason come through the academy that we're just conditioned to seeing them all that way, mikey is a powerful lad and can more than handle himself. of course he's not all the way there yet but he's not a weed like bryan.

I reckon an ant could body Bryan, mate. It’s not people like Bryan that are going to be marking Mikey. I still think he’ll get bullied personally, that’s not to say I don’t rate him or think he can make an impact off the bench here and there, I just think talk of him being ever present in the first team squad are premature.

Yesterday 16yo MM was already Moore physically developed than 23yo Gil.

I'm not expert and haven't seen huge amounts of Moore, but he looks to have decently thick legs for a kid and that's where the stability will come from.

I think he showed yesterday that he is More than capable of playing men’s football and can look after himself

Is it too late to cancel Werner’s loan? 😂

Use Mikey as a LW where he’s best and go and sign a RW.
I think people are getting a bit carried away to be honest. The lad should be given time. If he breaks out early then great, he'll take someone else's spot. But we should be patient with him and see any minutes he gets as a bonus. He's under 21 so not taking a spot that Werner has anyway. I'm sure part of the thinking is to have Werner as a stop gap while we bed in Moore.

Owen is a bit different as the injuries did him in.

Messi and Ronaldo are shells of their former selves, theyre only playing because of their status not because theyre actually doing much on the pitch and theyve both been like that for a good few years now.

Rooney hit that stage lets say 4-5 years earlier than them but also really started racking up games maybe 2-3 years earlier so in the end his prime career was not necessarily much less than theirs.

It depends if you really value these years at the twilight of their careers but for me personally id rather have started younger whilst i had the legs, over being able to drag out a few extra years at the end of my career not playing well.

rooney was great but if he had lived like Ronaldo he would have had a far longer career

he is def not going to get bullied like Gil

he will prob be an impact sub, we will have a lot of energy off the bench

He probably won’t make many benches in the PL. Too many players ahead of him. Best case for him is to be part of the match day squad as an extra player. He should be making the bench for Cup and Europa though.

The way I am trying to look at is that they don't want to put too much on Moore right now, even as a Son back up.

So Werner comes in and allows Moore to gradually make an impression so that by the end of the season Moore is getting many more minutes and Werner has essentially acted as a short stop gap.

I just want to gauge the general sentiment around Mikey's development. Does anyone realistically feel he should be making the bench for all of our 1st team games?

I can't see whose spot on the bench that he takes at the moment and I'm guessing his main developmental minutes this season will come from U21 football, 1st team cup games and the odd PL game.

That feels like the right level of exposure for a 17 year old, as he'll still get more than enough competitive minutes with the U21s, while training with the 1st team and featuring in our cup games.
