For good reason.Same comment comes up every time we have a player playing really well.

Not really. It's a bit boring IMO and doesn't really add anything to the discussion. For good reason.
Wonderful description! He's like Jan Vertonghen with rocket boosters.
In terms of pace, Des Walker comes to mind. But Des was not nearly as physical or good on the ball. Plus his reading of the game could be hit and miss. Explains why once he lost some of that pace, he rarely played for England again after the age of 29. [Des spent a big chunk of his career at Forrest. Alongside Stuart Pearce].I don't want to sound hyperbolic, but has there ever been a CB like him?
I'm 28 - so maybe some older fans can enlighten me.
This comment was made in response to a forward looking comment about him being captain one day, and that if we want to keep players like him we’ll have to move up in the world. You may not like it but it’s completely accurate. Not really. It's a bit boring IMO and doesn't really add anything to the discussion.
x player is playing well. We better enjoy as he'll be off to RM next season. Rinse and repeat.
Is it though? I can only think of two players we have “lost” since Bale went to Madrid in 2014\15. One was Kyle Walker. The other is Kane. But it is hard to argue we lost the latter. It was a situational decision. He’d already given us eight amazing seasons. And if he had forced the move through to City, that would have been a loss. But Levy stood firm. Then Bayern come along and offer us 90m for a player about to turn thirty in the last year of his contract and had no interest in staying once he was a free agent. This comment was made in response to a forward looking comment about him being captain one day, and that if we want to keep players like him we’ll have to move up in the world. We aren’t that club anymore.
If he keeps up his current form I wouldn't be surprised if he gets registered for the latter stages should we progress and a keeper drops out.Question if we put Davies in at CB is who plays LB when Spence isn't registered.
Still...goal for Spurs in a cup final...you can't argue with that.In terms of pace, Des Walker comes to mind. But Des was not nearly as physical or good on the ball. For me, that’s the point.Alternatively, which top player did we manage to keep despite interest from a top club?
Son's the only one on the list and I think that's quite a special case given how we handled his military service and the loyalty that earned us.
Man U coming for Toby at a push maybe but was never that serious.
I'm under no illusions that Madrid haven't already started the ball rolling on Romero...
That’s true, but it’s also because we were actually competitive in the years from 2015 up until Conte’s implosion. I have no doubt that we will do our best to hold on to our best players, but we can’t force them to sign new contracts. And genuinely top players won’t sign new contracts if we’re not looking like competing for the highest honours. Is it though? I think my point was that we've lost almost every top player we've had but in recent years we've not had too many of them. No one's caught the eye of Madrid, etc so we've not been tested. For me, that’s the point.
We don’t lose or keep players because of our CL status.
It’s pretty much only when an elite club comes in big for one of our players.
Which is exactly my point.I think my point was that we've lost almost every top player we've had but in recent years we've not had too many of them. No one's caught the eye of Madrid, etc so we've not been tested.
I think this is partly right, but equally when we’re in a strong position (competing at the top of the league) and we have our top players tied to long contracts then the elite clubs will only make a move if they DESPERATELY want to sign one of them, because they know it will come at the expense of a summer long transfer saga and a huge fee. Even Kane didn’t attract serious interest until we became less competitive and his contract began to run down.I think my point was that we've lost almost every top player we've had but in recent years we've not had too many of them. No one's caught the eye of Madrid, etc so we've not been tested.

Yeah but that's what we should've done anyway and it doesn't help us for the next seven games in that competition. If he keeps up his current form I wouldn't be surprised if he gets registered for the latter stages should we progress and a keeper drops out.
Apart from Kane to Bayern I guessI think my point was that we've lost almost every top player we've had but in recent years we've not had too many of them. No one's caught the eye of Madrid, etc so we've not been tested.
But we keep a lot them for several seasons before losing them, Modric, Bale, Kane obviusly.....thats the point.
We dont lose them on the first season of being good.
