Oh, he's not an idiot then.

All depends who he told.
If he told one of his brothers or his missus told someone, for example and they bet against his knowledge, I would say no he is not at all.

If he went and stood outside the local bookies, with a sandwich board saying, "I am moving to Atletico, have a bet on me and skin the bookies", then yes

How would you/could you get found out doing this? Actually asking out of curiosity. Surely he could have anyone walk in with 5k cash (for example) - (or do it online) and put it down on Trippier moving clubs.

Or would something like that raise massive eyebrows? What would the bookies do? Investigate you? I don't understand it, really.

Betting on transfers is very small business for the bookies.
Any reasonable sized bet would stand out.

ah ok, could they then reject the bet? They're quick to take your money but as soon as you thought you've 'won' - they hit you with some legal shit and return your bet.

Seems to me that he probably enabled the bet by telling someone he was off.
His public denial:
“I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting.”
... of course only make things clear on the matters he is not being charged with.
He makes no denial/comment on the likely offence.

What an idiot he is. I really dont understand why footballers bet on football.
Trippier's an idiot because it allegedly has to do with his own transfer. Whether he bet it or someone else did with information he gave them, that's definitely not allowed. But i've got no qualms with footballers betting other teams games if they have nothing to do with him. Transfer and managerial props is different because even if it doesn't involve yourself, the subject can tell you information. It's 2020. Betting should be fine everywhere as long as you have nothing to do with the games or events.

I've always bit a bit meh about players getting done for bets on transfers. They're going to talk to their friends and family about moving club's - they have to, it's a massive decision in their lives. Can you imagine not telling your best mate or your brother that you were going to be moving until after you'd moved to another city? It's ridiculous. If bookies are stupid enough to take bets on transfers then tough luck if they get burnt every now and then.

Really simply it's not allowed as it could really easily create a you scratch my back I'll scratch yours scenario.

They throw the book at him and give him whatever the maxium penalty is and then some to make an example of him

They made an example of Sturridge. He was originally fined £75k by an independent commission and banned for six weeks with four of those suspended. The FA appealed and the fine was doubled and his ban increased to a worldwide four months. He was found guilty of telling his brother to bet on a possible move to Sevilla. Not exactly the same as Trippier's case, but similar and he will no doubt be heavily punished.
