I honestly don't think Dier can do a job at right back anymore. He's lost an awful lot of pace since the last time he played fullback with any regularity.

If we go into the season Foyth, KWP, and a crocked Aurier on the right and Davies and a teenager who hasn't played the position in two years on the left as our fullback options then I don't think we'd realistically be competing with City and Liverpool. That would be understandable as closing the gap entirely in the space of one transfer window was probably always unrealistic, but I think in that scenario it'd be fair to put fullback down as a problem area.
At this point I can see Eriksen, Toby, Trippier and Rose out for 150/200m with Lo Celso and Sessegnon in to replace. Maybe we will re-sign Llorente. I'm not sure we will do any other business. Ceballos and Saliba situations are unclear and it's also not apparent that we have irons in the fire as alternatives. I think both may be the case of them being talented players so us taking a punt on them.

Overall it would probably leave us in a very similar position to last season, scraping 4th. We wouldn't have made too many immediate improvements but we would at least be well set for the next few years. We'd need a CM and left back on top of that at the very least, with another forward ideally to be competing this season. That's ignoring RB too.

Well, yeah, but it makes you wonder what he makes of Aurier and KWP considering Trippier has been his first choice RB for the past 2 years.
I think Serge had overtaken his last season but injuries just derailed it. Serge started just about every champions league game he was fit for (both Dortmund games, both Inter games and was only available for one PSV game). He was just hurt so often that he couldn't truly grab hold of the spot.

Nothing to worry about. People are forgetting that Poch left open Son playing wing back again after that Chelsea game ....

Aurier performed well in the CL. If we can keep him fit, he’d be a regular starter

Assuming for a moment it's not intended for KWP to step up and given that we're splashing some cash, what right backs could we realistically get that could be an improvement?

I think we'll stick with what we have + Stephen Sessegnon. Given the choice and the fact that we really need HG players, I'd like us to go for Matt Doherty who I think is attainable.

SSN just reporting on it saying talks are progressing well and there is increasing confidence on both sides a deal could be done by weekend... they then finished the report by saying that the only thing that could hold up the deal is Trippers lack of Spanish could be a problem as Simmone is very concerned by this..

Tripps could take Spanish lessons from Bale (when he’s not playing golf) as they both will reside in Madrid.

I imagine he would have a hefty price tag now? Probably £35m+ in the current market

I don't think for one second Steven Sessegnon is going to be an immediate replacement for Trippier but it's clear that Poch wants to define a team for the next 5 years.

Short-term we will have some little bumps and teething problems but if Poch thinks he can mould the Sessegnons, Sanchez, Foyth, Saliba (if he comes) into a defence that will likely be the backbone for the next 5+ years then I'm not going to question his intentions.

Liverpool just won the CL with a 20 year old RB and a 22-year old CB

Why?

It's a limited sample size, but he was excellent there against City, and apparently was good there for Argentina. There's only one way we're going to find out if it's a long term option.

Remember seeing an interview with that spitting twat cargaher talking about Liverpool making room in the side for him when he was a young player, remember him playing left back and right back a lot when they had an established CB partnership.
He said it was great to get used to playing in the first 11 in an easy position to play in and was great for his development.
Is this what we have in mind for Foyth? Because if we don’t starting playing him and to a lesser extent Sanchez regularly soon they might not become the players they should

I know it has been poo pooed, but I cannot seriously believe we aren’t considering Dani Alves on a 1 year deal...guy is the most successful and decorated footballer in history, and is a proven winner. If he isn’t a good guy to have around the team I don’t know who is. Foyth, KWP, Steve Sess can all bed in and learn from one of the greatest fullbacks to play the game...

Full back isn't an 'easy' position any more like it was when Carragher started playing 40 years ago. It's now one of the most demanding positions on the pitch.
