I'm just not a fan. There's something about him that reminds me of Chiriches. Technically good and will come up with a really fun moment where he does a bit of skill to bring the ball out of defence, but for 90% of the time I worry that he's defensively suspect. I think these "technically gifted" ball-playing defenders can be a bit overrated. I'm not saying we go back to the old fashioned Wes Morgan bullying unit type of defender, but what you want is composure. David Luiz was the best example of this. Foyth isn't as mad as him, but it's a similar type of player. Centre backs who have a degree of technical ability about them but lack a footballing brain or any sort of discipline and composure. They end up as headless chicken on the pitch and get caught of position, or they do something rash. John Stones has that problem too. Can play a ball and is good with it at his feet, but is a fucking stupid defender at times.

To be fair, if any coach will beat that out of a player it's Mourinho. He does like playing one creative, technical defender such as Carvalho and Lucio alongside a classic centre half, but the trick with them is they were also very smart and had a lot of composure. It's down to Foyth to learn the game. He's young, so maybe there is time, but I'm just not sure that whether we should take that risk.

He probably needs a loan tbh where he can play week in week out and learn to banish these errors from his game. He’s still very young and inexperienced for a centre back. He’s not terrible by any stretch, he just needs more experience imo.

I think his turning point was falling over everywhere pissed out of his face whilst claiming he hoped Spurs would be a good stepping stone to a big club like Chelsea.

How's that working out for you Vlad, you big old twat.

As a central defender/full back he should be able to tackle and have an awareness of the defensive side of the game.

Is he a defensive midfielder?

I am not going to pretend to know one way or the other. Or am I just clutching at straws.

He’s a great footballer, but he’s a long, long way from being a top defender.
He's actually a really good defender.
What people are focusing on is his mistakes.
People seem to think other defenders don't make mistakes but the reality is they make mistakes every game.
Van dyke the alleged best defender in the league is making worst mistakes then Foyth has but getting away with them.
Foyth lost the ball 35 yards from goal and Toby and Gaza should have done a lot better.
Foyth defending was actually very good but people forget that part.

Im all for believing in our players and their abilities but the amount of leeway some players get compared to others (Moura) is staggering at times.

The reason Foyth was so far up the pitch is because he decided to go on a dribble directly towards the opposition player then didn't know what to do and lost the ball. It left a massive hole through the middle, with a number of Norwich players bearing down on Toby, who backed off because he didn't want to commit and encourage the pass (although i think he waited too long). To almost suggest Foyth wasnt totally to blame is madness.

As much as he has a bit of ability his lack of defensive awareness is a real worry. Of course he may improve on this but that doesn't take away the fact he has made a number of high profile terrible mistakes which have and haven't cost us.

Foyth must take responsibility. My memory of the goal though is that he was not that far up. He was essentially in the defensive line.

However retreating to penalty spot is absolutely the wrong thing for Toby to do- way too deep. Once the forward gets to shooting range he needs to challenge for the ball and take him down if necessary.

Gazzaniga beaten by a low shot not in the corner... might do better but F and A fucked it

He’s clearly cocked up a few times. But seriously....are some out there really suggesting we get rid? There’s a place in this first team squad for this very young talented player, whether it’s right back, centre back or CDM. He seems to be good enough to be a Argentina international player. Think we have far bigger issues to deal with before looking at Foyth.

Every single player on the pitch in every game makes mistakes.
He first touch was heavy which allowed the ball to get away from him which led to him chasing his second touch and being tackled.
I see this 20 times a game in every game.
I didn't say Foyth was blameless I said Toby and Gazza could have done a lot better. If Toby would have closed down the player earlier he couldn't have played the through ball because the Norwich players would have been offside.
Every single one of our defenders have been making high profile mistakes in every game that's why we've been conceding lots of goals.
Toby Jan and Sanchez have all been at fault for goals that could've been avoided costing us points.
The idea that Foyth is some kind of a liability while our other defenders aren't costing us points is ridiculous.

Come on...everyone agrees that JF has ability and promise, but that does not exempt him from his lack of awareness! Dude makes boneheaded mistakes EACH TIME he steps on the pitch! Yes, Jan/Toby/Davinson all make mistakes, but to compare theirs to JFs is absurd. They each run circles around him.

He is young, so a loan might do him some good. I'd rather see the kid get some time at CDM instead of RB/CB...at least then he would not be the last line of defense.

18 months ago I would have agreed.
But Jans position when puki get through on goal was laughable.
Tobys positioning when Foyth was tackled was rubbish.
Foyth has played plenty of times and been excellent without bonehead mistakes.
He was excellent against Bayern.
You are talking about 3 games he's played 32 times for us.

You'd give him time at CDM after the last mistake he just made?

He clearly will never be a midfielder of any kind.

I like him though, like others have said he needs a loan.
