Gutted for this lad. Sort of promised he will be playing, be it CB or RB before the season when he's fit, but the Belgian CBs are still in front of them no matter the contract situation and Poch rather plays Sissoko at RB than him.

How to stay motivated...?

Eh? Injury has clearly disrupted his season. If he wasn't injured i'm sure we would have seen more of him by now. All the signals coming from the club during the summer were that he was going to get a crack at playing right back.

Which problem to solve though? The CDM one or the RB one? Both massive issues.
Either but I was thinking Cdm given how good he is on the ball. And if we bought a pair of flying fullbacks (Sess plus a rb) he could do what Dier did before he went to mcdo - drop in to create 3 at the back.

Decent shout - Bit unsure as to why we stopped doing this - gives us freedom on the flanks and an extra man in defensive situations. This may solve both problems providing our RB option does their job - still feel KWP would benefit more from the game time than Aurier, the latter just seems to have issues in his game that will never be fixed.

Think MPs tactics this year have tried to take us in another direction - presumably one he felt would make us better/more competitive but new signings aside, we just don't have the players for his new(ish) system as yet. The old one would provide a solid option in the interim surely.

Agree.

The diamond get like a way to accommodate all of our best players, particularly Lo Celso, Ndombele and Son into the same formation. But without Lo Celso and fullbacks it hasn’t worked.

id go with what you wrote ..

Because our fbs were providing so little from the wide positions that Dier had to be sacrificed for more creative CMs- either than or he got injured

and then we gradually discovered we didn’t have any creative midfielders so we bought a couple of blinders

then still don’t fkin pick em

I would love to see Foyth tried out at DM. There's no indication that he'd be used there by Poch though. Maybe he can be his new Dier though as we know he's played three positions in our team.

Hmm, CDM is a different kettle o' fish.

Can see him turning blind having a poor touch and lunging in to make up for it.

His touch is hit and miss when he can see everything in front of him, so on the half turn when he's not so aware of what's there if/when he turns...:cautious:

He’s very composed. Are you thinking of that one match against Bournemouth ?

Lets not mistake composure for being good on the ball.

whenever he tries to carry the ball he looks at risk of overrunning it.

Then add in the fact that in CDM you have to play with your head on a 360 degree swivel it adds another element of danger.

Dier is (supposedly) composed on the ball too, doesn't stop him getting robbed of possession or turning into trouble. and that's someone that has played the position for a while.

With a lot of teams employing a press now, I'm not sure it's a risk worth taking.
