Sanchez passing isn't the best part of his game it is hit and miss however he is imo the best defender at the club. Surprisingly nobody seems to mention how good Sanchez is at bringing the ball from a low block into midfield with his runs.
I think it would be hard to put Davinson above Toby as the best defender. Davinson has to use his pace a lot to get himself out of the trouble that his positioning has got him into. When he gets the ball square he always looks uncomfortable to me. Having said all that his cross field pass to Reguilon suggests that the coaching staff are working on this area. I would love for Davinson to blossom into the defender we all thought he would become.

Isn't 25 a bit too old to be a prospect?
Nah...

I don't think it's a case of this guy or Tanganga.

Foyth has left (albeit on loan but it looks unlikely he'll be back), and Toby is realistically potentially in his last season for us.

That leaves us with Dier, Sanchez, and Tanganga. Certainly room in the squad for two more CBs by the end of the season.

This looks like smart forward planning, to me.

I'm not too sure that it is Toby's last season. He is 31 and only turns 32 in March, it's not like he is 33/34 and nowhere what he used to be like Vertonghen last year.
He can still do a job for a couple of years, particularly if he stays fit. I still think he is our best defender.

Can't see Toby going anywhere soon, signed a new 3 year deal 10 months ago that takes him to 2023. Assume it's for a decent wage so can't see him giving that up, seems pretty settled.

Swansea have been playing 3 at the back since last season. It is something they switched to when Joe was injured and it seems to work for them, gave them good results which ended them in the top 6. They have started this year the same. In their first 4 league games they have only let 1 goal in, which was a keeper mistake

I don't think it's hard at all. Toby has regressed a great deal and for some unbeknown reason gets a pass all to often. He can hit a diagonal ball better than most but when it comes down to pure defending headers tackles interceptions blocks recovery pace Sanchez out performs him. The issue with Sanchez is that people remember his mistakes which are generally misplaced passes he has to work on that, when played with a footballing centre back the balance is good.

Also given our wing-back situation, I reckon we might use a back 5 more often this season in certain tactical situations. Four senior CBs probably isn’t enough cover if we play three of them at once in a good percentage of our matches.

Not "this is categorically Toby's last season with us".

I wouldn't be shocked if he left in 2022, to finish his career at a competitive club in a smaller league (like Jan has done).

Maybe, would still be giving up a year of a fair wage I'd imagine. Wouldn't be surprised if he sees out the deal and leaves on a free like Jan in 2023.

It’s for sure what will happen. No one is going to give him the same wages and the big clubs (which could pay him those wages) don’t buy old CBs.

True but he might take the security of a 2 year deal on slightly less wages than hope he gets a 1 year deal someone. Anyways we have 2 years to worry about that and this isn't tobys thread

He's two years younger than Jan and has looked a bit past his prime for about two years. Hopefully it's just form (the whole squad was underperforming for a while) or the midfield not doing its job (lack of a CDM / balanced CM pairing).
Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a good player, but I considered him and Jan the best CB pairing in world football for a while. My concern is that if he is slightly past his peak at 31, he's going to be well past it at 34.

I think Jose wants a real aerial presence in the squad which is not something I think we really have.
I've been thinking about this too and this is the best rationale I can think of for signing Rodon besides having another promising CB for the future.

While we have a good crop of top-6 calibre centre backs with Toby, Dier, Sanchez, and [potentially] Tanganga, none of them are particularly powerful in the air. Although he probably won't walk into the first XI — Rodon would be a good specialist option to play against hoof ball teams who are likely going to sit back and look to beat us via a cross into the box [i.e. Newcastle game].

Jose could also potentially utilize him as a defensive sub to defend the box and protect the lead.

--

If we were to sign him he won't be playing in the Europa League group stages though now that he's missed squad registration.
