I suspect the fee being offered by Milwall/other clubs was about equal to his remaining wages. So better to just rip the plaster off now and free up time and resources to incomings.

Cheers Japh, we'll always have those magic first few weeks. I'm sure he'll go on to a long career at the championship/lower prem level.

Not sure why we didn’t do what we did with BLF - extend his deal then let him go for a free in exchange for a sell on clause.

Good luck to the lad though, this widens his options.

It does seem like a small shift in Levy prepared to take loses rather than long it out
I think the days of squeezing £10m to £15m for our squad players to once gullible Stoke's and Portsmouth's are long gone.

It will be interesting to see how the transfer market pans out this summer. IMO, I think it will be considerably quieter than prior years. I could be wrong, but just a gut feel.

They probably don’t see him being sold for decent money, so lot of faff for something highly unlikely to ever come off.

Fair play to the club here. Allows him (and Sess) to go and maybe get a decent signing on bonus and doesn't drag anything out for any parties.

Hope he goes back to Millwall as they clearly loved him a lot there, and he was great for them, and it's not easy in football to find that in your career.

If so that’s a calculation that could come back to bite them. As he’s shown at Millwall when he gets a run of games he’s a very decent player. In fact I am surprised at them not holding out for a fee now, but good luck to him. He’s going to have great options now.

He is a decent player. At that level.
Even if he really shines, a low prem club may offer what, £10m-£15m? Sell-on is usually 20%. So not worth it.
He’s never going for big money.

If it helps him find a new club quicker, or make his wage agreement with Millwall easier then fair play to the club in not taking up the option to extend.

Lad needs a proper full season training and to then regularly play. He'll do well for himself.

Trouble is if you extend deals for these players with their injury records and they fail medicals you're committed to another year of wages. It makes sense, at the end of the day it's a 1 year option for a reason and we have no reason to keep them. Good luck to the lad.

Possibly looks better for younger players coming though that see the club is no longer totally obsessed with obtaining a fee at the expense of completely stagnating a career.

Never understood why he wanted to play centre back given he was a pretty decent RB. I think that cost him in the end. I don't think he will be a good CB for anyone in the PL.

Sort of presuming by the way the announcement has been handled and with Son doubling up on that message, releasing him along with the others is something of a goodwill gesture from the club. Wishing him all the best in the future. 🙏😎

Good luck to him, he showed on his loan at Millwall that he is a good player. Was stunted for far to long in the squad when he was never going to make it, which held back his development.

Good for him but yet again we miss out on any sort of fee for a player.

I thought he had a 1 year option - couldn't we have extended and at least received a nominal fee from Millwall for him?

Our youth production line used to produce talents which we then sold for tangible and useful fees - these days with both youth and senior players if we're not paying them off we're letting them go for nothing.
