It was sore to see him like that, was reminiscent of when Ledley got proper done by I think Darren Huckerby and you just knew it was all coming to an end.

Club Legend Jan is, hope he gets a proper reception next game to lift the spirits, I felt that with him yesterday.

Don't think so, he left Norwich in 2008 but it was Norwich in 2011 or 2012.

Id give him a huge player coach contract and then loan him out to Ajax or a team in Italy for a couple of years if he wants to play still or til he is ready to coach.
Please don't let him walk away from the club because if he can teach some of the youngsters to be a fraction of the player he has been then there will be some mighty fine players coming through.

So so sad to see him torn up like that. He didn't have a bad game either as a lot of what Southampton did well came down to just pulling our midfield apart and the working on our exposed back line.

The problem is that Tanganga is more versatile and keeping him on was the right decision as he was able to then move over to LB later on when Sanchez came on.

A little while until our next game, even longer till our next home game but, whether he's involved or not, it would be great to see the crowd belt out Super Jan Vertonghen at the very start of the game for a couple of minutes. He looked like he needed some support last night. Very sad to see.

Seeing as I kicked this off...………….

Stone fucking cold man. Stone. Cold.

Doesn't change it, he's not the future. It's not a nice thing to see, but try and turn that negative into a positive. For every game Jan might have between now and the end of the season that's potentially games where Foyth could be finding form, or Dier being revitalised at CB, or the next Tanganga. And another squad option sorted for next season instead of needing to make signings.

Some see it as a competition to show how tough and manly they are. “No room for sentimentality in football” as if they’re these ball-busting winners in their own lives with Mamba mentality. It’s so insecure to act like you don’t get emotionally attached to players - either you’re putting on a facade, or you’re a sociopath imo

FWIW - I don’t think Jan is past it. I think he’s just too desperate for a new deal and it’s making him play below his usually impeccable standards. Hope he reconnects as he’s still the most naturally talented defender we have. Favourite Spurs player ever for me, idc.

See above.

But yes.

Sociopath.
Which is ironic, seeing as most football fans seem to be such delicate, sensitive little flowers.

I might be many things, but...

Looks like ol' Jan has had his Gary Neville 'fathertime' moment dawning on him.

Been a fantastic servant to us and a fundamental reason as to why we are now seen as an elite club.

I'm hoping he takes the decision away from the club to move to a league less demanding but equally, we need to be giving minutes to players who will be potentially playing a part in the rebuild.

I think all these obituaries are way too early.

The bedrock of our defence he may no longer be but it is not inconceivable that he remains an important player who can play a role for us.

Many defenders have adapted to a loss of pace and continued at a very high level.

It was Grant Holt who bullied Ledley towards the end of Ledley's time. Not Darren Huckerby.

I was at that game and it was one of the most depressing moments of supporting Spurs. And there's been many, but this Jan incident may even trump that.

Not nice to see him visibly deflated and upset but I think he actually played pretty well overall. Playing a deeper defensive line should help him to get some more time on the pitch also and I'm sure his experience and presence about the place is valuable to the club as we rebuild.

True, true.

I think one of the issues is that he's playing along side Toby, who's never been the fastest, and (while a couple of years younger) may have also just passed his physical peak.

If either one of them play with the faster Sanchez, or even Tanganga, they'll look far more comfortable.

Unfortunately for Jan, Toby is currently the better player and so going to get more games.

And I think this is the role he's going to have to accept, if he's to stay with us beyond the end of this season - which I hope he does.

Jan has been a total pro throughout his time with us and is undoubtedly one of the most talented defenders we have ever had at the club. It's a bitter pill to swallow seeing his rapid decline and clearly he knows it too. As others have said I'd love to see him as a coach for us in the future as you just know he would be fantastic at it.

I thought it was Rory Delap who nailed Ledley and ruined his career?

Not sure how his knee problems started, though I think remember reading he had said his first injury was picked up in one of his first games and he was then plagued by it forever more.

The last, and 'fatal', injury was rumoured to be him colliding with one of the youth keepers during one of his rare forays out on to the training pitch. This happened about mid-season and after that he really really struggled. There was the penalty he conceded against Man City, where he did the most un-Ledley like thing of desperately diving in, and after that he was just getting fucked over by opposition forwards every week. Grant Holt being the one that springs to mind the most.
