For me when Jan first came to us I wasn’t impressed. Not strong enough and too many mistakes. Since those early days imo he’s been our best and most consistent defender

He struggled when he had no protection from the midfield - was it AVB days? In many ways it seem very similar now, his head also dropped back then. Will be interesting to see how everyone look if we can tighten up in front of them. I hope Vertonghen get a move away though, but maybe Alderweireld will benefit.

As soon as Vertonghen was dropped at the start of the season, it was clear things weren't right, and this was nothing to do with ability.

Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Rose & Eriksen have all been off form during contract / transfer speculation. It's not surprising and certainly isn't an indication that any of the are "finished". The solution in each case is to either get them to commit (Alderweireld done) or replace them (transfer window has just opened). All of Vertonghen, Eriksen and Rose would be very capable of becoming a key player for another top-flight team (they just need to be settled and bought into the club philosophy), so all would be a big loss and difficult to adequately replace without huge investment.

Have you seen Toby play at all this season? The man is finished. Theres a very good reason he had no interest in him for £25m.

I love how you always like to make striking, headline grabbing general statements with everything black or white. Almost troll like.

I bet if I went over your posts you would have said give Toby what he wants.

It’s playground stuff !

Toby is no where finished - maybe not as good as he once was but in the real world you don’t get rid of every player and then simultaneously get a load of new players in. In your world we would be buying and selling an entire team every week. Ridiculous.

Forgetting his defending for a moment (the whole team needs to improve on that, so it's not constructive to criticise someone who has probably been the best of a bad bunch this season)...

Since Mourinho came in, Toby's long balls have been integral to the way we play. So many attacks and chances have resulted from them - more than enough to offset the odd defensive error that he's made.

Nothing decided yet, they do have an option, but Aké could still make the choice himself. Arsenal have asked about him too.

He literally gave Gazza the death stares on at least 3 occasions against Southampton. He was getting the ball passed to him with no option than to knock it long on quite a few occasions. Not sure Sess helped his game too much.

According to the Telegraaf (reliable mostly) Ajax should have inquired about Vertonghen but we want £13m or so which is to high. Also wages a problem

Toby is a class player and it's a bloody good job he has extended his contract. Our RB is awful, our LB, Sessegnon, looks out of his depth and the defensive cover in front of the back four is almost non-existent. Our normally almost infallible players like Jan and Toby are bound to make the odd error with the extra defensive cover they have to provide for the incompetents around them.

Does Sessegnon look ‘out of his depth’ or like a 19 year old who has only just been signed playing within himself during his first start at LB?

The ease at which some of you write off players is crazy.

Toby was a class player. Its no longer 2018. His rapid regression has been absolutely staggering.

Not giving up on Verts yet. He's has been with us for so long and am still thinking his current poor form just needs motivation to get him back into gear. We will see a committed Verts once more when confidence level across the back got sorted out and winning some games on a roll.

ITK of KK and others but not a DM got me thinking will we see Verts operating in that role perhaps in Mourinho's plan? Imagine a double pivot of Dier and Verts covering the FBs of Aurier and Sess as they bombed forward.

He's playing this season than he did under Tim Sherwood, so it would definitely be hasty to write him off.

What more possible motivation does he need? His coach of 5 years called him out for not being ready for the season and benched him. Now he’s got new life under a new manager and still playing poorly. Excuse doesn’t work for me.

I'm wondering if we actually did sign Koulibaly...would a back 3 bring out the best of JV again? Might also help with the lack of DM at the moment too.

Could also mean Sessegnon plays as a LWB and we need a new RWB to make it work effectively.

Big difference here is that he's no longer 27 - he's almost 34.

Much harder to bounce back from bad form at that age cause it does/can suggest regression.

I think we need to think about present-future, letting Jan go and bringing in someone who is either at their peak (Koulibaly) or has high potential (Dias). I don't see the sense in believing that Jan can remain a solid player. We did this with Dembele, even though he was failing. Rather than replace him immediately we did him a favour which was the wrong the thing to do.
