Yes. Footballers get paid a lot but if some fans had it their way, players would be shells of humans.

jeez, Ange has given all the players 2 day's off so he and johnson decide to go and watch a sporting event.

It's not like they went half way round the world and will have jet-lag either. You can literally see the Ally Pally from the stadium!!

Ye non issue.

Madders is quality but what I don't like is the constant diving, rolling around, and hissy fits at refs and our players when things don't go his way. It just screams to me of insecurity, a lack of confidence in your ability to win without cheating. So while I highly rate him as a player, I wouldn't put him in a leadership position.

Maddison snaps back at fan criticism after darts appearance

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has snapped back at a fan who branded him "unacceptable" for attending the World Darts Championships shortly after the draw with Wolves.

Just hours after Ange Postecoglou's side conceded a late Jorgen Strand Larsen equaliser in the 87th minute to make it 2-2, Maddison was spotted with team-mate Brennan Johnson at Alexandra Palace.

After images emerged of the England international watching the likes of Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright in action, one fan commented on the situation in anger.

"The form we're in and you go the darts? Unacceptable,' the fan wrote on Maddison's Instagram account.

To which the Tottenham man replied: "Shut up you wally," with a laughing emoji attached to it.

🤣🤣🤣
Good lad, of course he can go and enjoy the darts 🎯 although if he wasn’t on social media at all he’d avoid these keyboard warriors entirely.

Yep. Players should hide away after a poor result/performance. Purely to save fans who have less emotional intelligence than a blancmange.

We've got some stupid idiots as fans in all honesty.

How dare Maddison and Johnson enjoy their free time enjoying something they have an interest in.
It's not just fans though. I saw this sort of non story on my news feed this morning. It's typical of today's media. Said something along the lines of "Maddison and Johnson seen smiling at darts just hours after draw that left Ange fuming". Then you get these stupid fans who go along with it too.

Still can’t get my head around the level he was playing at before the Chelsea injury and the level he’s played at this season. Mind-boggling.

I can see both sides here.

A lot of fans are more heavily invested in a team's results than the players. For the players it's just a job, which is not to say they don't care about wins and losses - but they tend to be more pragmatic about it. Many fans don't understand that.

Conversely, many players don't understand the deep emotional impacts the teams have on fans.

Fans should not be targeting players on social media or out in public, and, honestly, Maddison should have not responded to this one. Just enjoy the darts.

Perhaps Maddison (and Johnson) used the darts as an escape for one evening considering the current poor run of form?

Some "fans" take it way, way too seriously at times. They're just human beings who need an escape like the rest of us when we're having a tough time in our jobs.

People need to stop overanalyzing what they do outside of football (unless it's criminal or something). Maddison and Johnson did nothing wrong. And I actually applaud Maddison for responding in a typical Maddison way. He wasn't rude about it. He called the person a wally.

Just let them live their lives. They're not robots.

He was oustanding against Brentford at home, was at the game.

But know what you mean.

I still think he's has produced more for us this season than the vast majority of the squad. I suppose though that is what we expect of him too.
I don't buy the narrative about him not turning up in big or away games but I do think there is something in questioning his consistency.
I think that slight lack of consistency and sometimes having very quiet games at times is something that is more noticeable when he has really really good games in betweeen them.

I’ve never really liked the term inconsistent as an analysis. It just fails to look at the issue or cause for the weakness.

I can’t quite work Maddison out.

I think he talks a good game and when things are going well he can shine.

I think he just isn’t up for the nitty gritty of the game or digs in and steps up when the chips are down.

He has wonderful ability so he will have moments in difficult games at times but I feel his overall performance lacks in those situations.
