I keep seeing this being posted about a lot of our players “not showing leadership.” But what does that even mean?

How do people know they aren’t showing leadership? Because they aren’t shouting at the other players? Or because they’re playing badly?

What represents good leadership?
You can spot good leaders a mile off on the pitch. They shout and bollock when they need to, they encourage, they lead by example when things aren't going well, and one thing they do more than anything is they don't allow those around them to slack off. What they don't do is go missing when backs are against the wall.

Sonny is more a club captain than an on field one for me. He's a wholesome role model poster boy, not someone you'd want to be stuck in the trenches with
Trix nailed it. It's individuals who have already earned their respect from the teammates which then allows them to operate where the mission is more important than anything else - what people think of them, the short term cohesion, etc.

The only players I’ve seen consistently do this is Vicario. But being a pointy shouty player isn’t necessarily good leadership if they are pointing and shouting at the wrong things.

Take John Terry or Adam’s or Henderson as recent examples, for me it’s not just the shouting, pointing, it’s the things you don’t see….. they have an aura about them, you just know who's in charge and so do the players.

That’s funny cos he’s actually been in trenches doing his national service and got commended on his behaviour.

Pointing and shouting is all very well, but the likes of Hojbjerg and years ago Robbie Keane loved to do it when it suited them whilst hiding from the ball when they didn’t fancy it.

Spot on Trix - and when was the last tie we had a captain like that?

After a couple of minutes delay, Maddison was the first player to come and clap the supporters. A few sheepishly followed him.

He was booed, as is understandable after that showing from the team, and kept clapping anyway.

That's the leadership we need. Start him at City.

Hope he can get a third. I'm sure the list of players getting a hat-trick on their birthday is incredibly small.

I hope it kicks his season off and he can play like this weekly. He was so key in the start of last season. Dictate the game and be involved in games and our level goes up.

So impressed with how he took control in such a big game. Sarr is full of running but not comfortable picking the ball up off the centre backs so Maddison took that role instead.

I've criticised Maddison quite a bit lately and today shows why. He's got everything to be a top player besides consistency. On his day he is unstoppable.

He epitomizes Spurs. When he’s on it he is absolute quality but just a bit off and he looks terrible.

When he’s on it, he’s top drawer.

A proper footballer with flair and style, he is so Spurs.

Delighted for him, comes across so well in interviews too.

Hopefully he can keep it going, because when he goes off the boil the team does too.

Outstanding.

And taking him out of the team was a stroke of genius.

Appetite back, and just worked harder in every aspect.

Great management Ange.

I think he’s always worked hard in fairness to him, just not his natural game though obviously.

Loved when he took it off Silva in the second half with ease
