Even Maguire and Grealish are out. Fair play to Southgate, he’s fully trusting the on form youth players where available.

Yeah, my only problem was that the late-night leak caused a pile on on Madders and Madders alone. But, who knows how that leak actually came about. 🤔

Totally agree with this.
Such a British thing. He's got us to a final and semi finals. Decades of under achievement in these tournaments and then we get a manager who actually begins to realise our potential and he's hated because he doesn't play certain players or has tactics they agree with.
On Madders, I love how gutted he is but owns that his form, post injury, means he understands the reason. Love players owning the disappointments.

In hindsight, what was the point of naming a 33 man squad, when appears all along he knew what his 26 will be. It has done nothing positive, and on the flip side, pissed 7 players off.

All international teams did it. It means you can get all the players training together and then if there are any injuries you are not calling someone back from their holiday or who is totally unprepared.

How have you reached the conclusion that he knew all along who his 26 would be? Personally I’d guess that he was on the fence about Grealish vs Eze and Palmer vs Maddison, and that the past week has convinced him that Eze and Palmer are ready for the step up so he can select on form rather than experience.

Unless I'm mistaken this happens every big tournament. They'll have a few players coming back from injury or carrying knocks so bring in the extras, assess and then trim accordingly. Seems eminently sensible to me considering the timelines.
Better to have the likes of Maddison keeping themselves in shape and ready to impress than calling them back from a fake beach in Dubai.

Well done Madders Agree with everything he said Gone up in my estimation

Also why are international managers so obsessed with the wild card young player Cant think of many of any examples where it pays off

Madders or Grealish give something different. maybe not a starter but they ve been there before and would more likely deliver.

While I agree that he probably didn’t deserve it based on form he’s still clearly well liked by his England Teammates and would have probably offered more on the trip than someone like Toney - who by the way scored 1 goal in his last 14 matches, not sure how he gets in.

I thought Maddison might get in because of his influence on the harmony of the squad. Like you said he appears to be well liked and that can be important in international tournaments
