It’s Pochettino that wanted him to play like Ederson. Thankfully Jose is just asking him to do what he does best now.

Great saves, passion and calmed the defence in front of him. No coincidence that Sanchez looks much better when he knows the goalkeeper isn’t going to be flying kicked the attackers

That wasn't the context, though - you were complaining that people were previously saying he never saves them. I was explaining that it's because his spurs career so far is book-ended by loads of saves around 2014, then almost 5 years of pretty much not saving them, then he's back on it within the last year. That's pretty much the entirety of Poch's time here that he struggled to save any.

I get that DDG and some others aren't very good at saving penalties, but it wasn't a comparative or a criticism - it was an explanation of why the general feeling was that he didn't save any. It also wasn't an expectation that he should (as another poster stated).

Some keepers are very good - Kharine at Chelsea had a save rate of nearly 50% (5 out of 11), and Srnicek was similar (5 of 12). Some of the best PL goalkeepers might not have been so good at them (Schmeichel isn't anywhere near the top 10).
It was wrong of me to use that as an example of obvious stupidity.

It is irrational though. Luck plays such a strong role that you would expect to find all goalkeepers regress to the mean over time. There’ll be fluctuations in performance in that time - pretty extreme fluctuations in Lloris’ case - but over time there is not a huge difference between goalkeepers.

The correct response should have been - Lloris has been particularly unfortunate with his penalties lately. You would expect him to start saving a few soon.

The absolute judgements were also wrong because at any point in his career his save percentage has been expected, never bad. So it was just another way to criticise our captain. Which some people seem desperate to do.

I can't wait for him to punt one out of play in our next game for people to start calling for a new keeper in the summer.

The guy's the best keeper we've had in 25+ years, he's our club captain and a world cup winning captain. You never hear a peep from his agent, he's dedicated and professional (aside from the drink driving fiasco) and has, for the most part, been excellent at stopping shots going in the net, which is his job, so that's good.

At his best he is one of the top 3 keepers in the world. The last 18 months he was very shaky though. Especially the last season at Wembley and first month of this season. Glad to see him back to what looks like his better form. Hopefully Gazza can learn from him the next 18 months and be a better keeper ready to take over when Lloris declines.

Perhaps he has benefited from a good long break ? He was in danger of getting dropped before his injury.

Some great saves but what was he doing running out from his line in the second half and colliding with Tananga? Those impulsive decisions still need to be ironed out of his game. Although I guess they never will be.

So glad he’s back though.

Lol I came here to praise his performance yesterday as he made a few really good saves and some decisive claims. But to cuss Gazzaniga for something Lloris almost did yesterday but with Tanganga is pots and kettles. We know Lloris strengths and weaknesses and he is one of the best shot stoppers in the world. He is definitely prone to the same rushes of blood as gazzaniga though not as frequently.

Great to have him back as you know for his faults he will pull off those saves like the Aguero one and will more often than not pull a worldie out of the bag.

Gazza did okay for us while he was injured but Hugo is 100x the better keeper.

Great to have him back.

Perhaps he's worried about Gazza? Let's be fair the boy was pretty consistent when filled in for Hugo & maybe it's made him think I've got competition.

Again, the best thing about having Lloris is his proactivity. His ability to be brave and snuff out chances before they become chances. It is something that will always sometimes result in errors, such as missing the ball when coming out for a cross blablabla, but it saves us so many times.

It's easy for a goalkeeper to stick to his line and not contest balls, the goalkeeper rarely gets criticised for it and no error is made. But since coming back Lloris' anticipation has been top class.

Maybe, but I think a gap has just made people forget how good Lloris actually is. Even when making mistakes, and he will continue to make mistakes, it is simply inevitable because he is a proactive keeper.

On the Crouch podcast he was saying that the best keeper he played with was David James and that he felt that he got a lot of stick for making mistakes, but he was only making mistakes because he was cutting out balls that most keepers would just leave. Breaking down potential chances and relieving the defence of pressure. Lloris is even better at that. Look at how he moves in his box, how he dominates his whole area, it's impressive.

Also, he will now make less mistakes because he will not be forced to make difficult passes from the back. Like spraying it out to the fullbacks and passing under pressure. Something Lloris got a lot of stick from, though he was never actually that bad at it (though not close to the level of these new ball playing goalkeepers). Again attempts at doing good, but risky, things for the team will always lead to mistakes.

I've heard Aguero's shot against the post referred to as taking a 'deflection' off Lloris twice now in the media. With some inference of Aguero being unlucky.

Isn't it an amazing save if it's off a goalkeeper?

Well that sort of thought doesn’t fit with the narrative that they should have won by 6 like everyone is making it sound.

Agree. I remember everyone saying we had upgraded the keeper position when we went from Gomes to Friedel, and I thought the opposite. Gomes made errors but he also made unbelievable saves and was proactive. Friedel made very few errors but never came out for crosses or 1:1s. If Gomes comes
out for 10 crosses Friedel doesn’t and drops one of them, he’s doing a better job. I lost count of the number of free headers from 6 yards teams got against Friedel

It’s not like it just hit Lloris either - he knew exactly what he was doing. It was a great save

He might not be the same Hugo from 2016, but he's still a phenomenal keeper. I'll take the occasional lapse of judgement if it comes with performances like that in huge matches. Captain's performance.

Fair point but I can't remember the ball ever going straight through Friedel into the net. With Gomes I can remember Fulham, Chelsea twice, Real Madrid all without trying to remember. Gomes was the best worst goal keeper we ever had.

He singlehandedly got us into the champions league the first time we qualified Gomes

Hugo did the right thing he was commanding his box, I dont see that as impulsive, I put that more down tanganga being off balance, that was hugos ball all day long

Either of them could have won the ball no problem on their own so it’s a question of communication imo
