Got a feeling we won't see him again. If he does get back fit, by the time that happens we will surely have made a move for someone unless we strongly believe Gazza can become our no.1 for the forseable future. Personally I would rather we tried to get someone in January and give them a few months before next season to get used to the premier league (I'm assuming we will be looking abroad for a keeper). Always takes keepers a while to get used to the premier league, Lloris took a while to get going so yeah it's a huge decision that faces us now.

Sure I know that. I'm talking purely about tactics that play him to his strengths.
Surely everyone can agree on what a good goalie should be, regardless of tactics? Yes it's awesome to find a keeper like Ederson who could do a job in midfield, but they're rare. You're hardly ever going to find a manager who will put footballing ability over keeping the ball out of the net adequately.

Saw rumour that we're looking at Onana ? from Ajax.
Probably just media chat though, although they did say £25m for him :woot: so sounds like Levi:whistle:

Crazy that his best days for us came when we were shit. I'd like to thank him for his service, but it's time to move on and the injury gives us the best opportunity to do so.

lol, you guys should just stop with this premature posts about the end of Hugo's career. None of us knows how this will pan out, he may very well end up retiring, or he may try to make a come back. If it's the later, every Spurs fan should give him his full support.

This.

I'm a strong critic of Lloris. But hey, calm down. A long injury layoff is nothing unusual in sports, much less football. The whole world saw how badly twisted his elbow was. At its worse, isn't 9 months to a year of recuperation expected?

And although the surgery may have weakened his arm, that doesn't necessarily will confirm it's useless after all. Surgery is so common at this age. Things really are not that bad!

Hugo certainly has his shortcomings and has his disaster moments (as do all keepers, nature of the beast) but he's been the best keeper we've had by a mile since I've followed spurs. I wish him a full speedy recovery from the surgery and can't wait to see him with the gloves on again.

All this "good reason to sell" shit is frankly ridiculous.

No you misunderstood my post, whether or not Hugo can physically make a comeback I simple dont think he's good enough to stick with regardless. We need someone with stronger mental fortitude that the defense can trust.

Too many people are far too sentimental about Hugo, ever since we became challengers he's almost shrunk within himself, to the detriment of us wining trophies. and while he'll always be able to make the unbelievable saves he consistently struggles in the biggest moments to correctly diagnose the danger and make the saves that he should.

Compounding his distribution from the back especially in high profile games always has the potential to put us under unnecessary pressure because he doesnt read the game well enough.

It's a personal preference but I much prefer a steady goalkeeper than a spectacular. Just as long as that steady keeper has more mobility than the Brad "Cement boots" Friedel.

At the risk of mistaking you for another poster and sounding like an idiot...

... didn't last season taught you anything? You were saying the same kind of things about Hugo, and then had to back track and write him a post "apologizing" for saying such things after he proved to be monumental for us in our run to the CL final.

Is not sentimentalism, Lloris has arguably been our best player of this past decade (or at the very least fighting for that spot with Luka, Bale and Harry) and just last season he proved yet again how important he can be for us. So no, unless this most recent injury signifies a significant drop in his goalkeeping skills, then I don't agree we need to upgrade just yet.

I completely disagree there. By the time he recovers from this injury, he'll be 33 years old. While he's still shown he can pull off some outstanding saves, his overall performance levels have decreased markedly over the past few years. Remember, he had a fair shout at being the best keeper in the world at one point. That decline will only continue.

Senseless mistakes will continue to be a part of his game, seemingly on an increased basis too. The last thing we need when we're trying to make wholesale changes to our defense is a goalkeeper that they can't trust because you never know when he's going to do something stupid to undermine their hard work.

Adding to that, he is clearly ill equipped and uncomfortable playing with the ball at his feet in the manner that the manager wants from his goalkeeper. We always look at risk of conceding (or at least conceding possession in a dangerous area) when the ball is at his feet, and other teams have clearly picked up on this. So if we are going to persist with the manager for the foreseeable future, then we need a goalkeeper that will fit properly into his system.

You only have to look at Man City and Liverpool to see how much difference the right goalkeeper can make to the way the team plays. The right goalkeeper for us is no longer Lloris.

If we want to compete with Liverpool and City we're gonna need a more consistent keeper and a keeper who is able to play with his feet, time to upgrade.

you're absolutely correct that i acted like an idiot. I got swept up with the sensationalism of reaching the final. I should have maintained my view on Hugo, but I got romantic and sentimental myself about our club captain and a very loyal servant.

Best player of the decade? Not even close, Hugo highs are towering, but his lows are just as deep and it's not just because of the position he plays. We need more consistency from the position imo.

I respect your stance, I do hope Hugo makes a full recovery both physically and potentially mentally, but it's time to respectfully move on.

I don't know man, this team looks like it has completely lost its identity. How can anyone comment on whether Lloris is or isn't the right goalkeeper for us when we probably don't even know what we're playing at anymore? Changes will definitely have to be made but, including Lloris in that list is extra risky considering all that he has meant for this team and for Pochetino.

Anyway, I think people are very likely exaggerating his insecurities at playing with his feet. It's true that his mistakes in that aspect of the game have incremented this season, but that very well could be a consequence of the team being in such a disarray atm and not of a hypothesized decline of his footballing skills.

And look, I'm liking very much what I'm seeing from Gazzaniga atm and, if Lloris does return, he will/should find it very hard to regain his position as an automatic starter, but the fact is that we don't look one bit better without him... not even with Harry Kane being now the captain (which many people here desperately wanted and felt like that somehow would make us play better or something).

Finally, unless we can find someone like Oblak, then there's simply not updrading over Lloris atm.

I disagree with you as I don't think Lloris is an inconsistent keeper.

But anyway, the only way we can realistically hope to upgrade over Lloris is by developing a young keeper, and that won't happen over night. Maybe that's what we're trying to do now with the academy keepers, though. We will see if Poch ever dares to play either of them.
