Lo Celso won 7 ground duals to Winks 2. In a game where the opposition have 63% of the ball there’s something very wrong there he’s supposed to be our CDM.

Winks is not the answer at CDM but it was an impossible job against Uniteds 3 man midfield when Sissoko's main role seemed to be to cover Aurier, which left Winks constantly outnumbered. The issue isn't Winks it is the system which Mourinho plays. If you play a double pivot, both players have to be disciplined and stay in position. That is why Sissoko and Winks has never worked as a partnership and never will. For me Winks should be cover for Ndombele and Lo Celso in a midfield 3 with a holding player sitting in front of the back 4.

Looked to me as though Winks was told to be more conservative and focus on defending space - which I think he did a fairly good job of - while Sissoko and Lamela/LoCelso were told to close down and make challenges.

To me their penalty summed things up.
He always passes responsibility to others, he basically just jogged into space and just stood there 3 yards away, watching Dier (who had been pulled out of position) getting turned inside out by Pogba instead of getting involved.

Average player when we have the ball, dreadful player without it.

Yeah I mention the exact thing on Thursday. Bizarre coaches don't see it.

Called it 100% right.

It is one of the basics of football and is unbelievable that Mourinho doesn't see it.

If you look at Liverpool, they have Henderson, Fabinho and Wijnaldum. All 3 are very disciplined and allow the full backs and strikers to attack while they protect the defence. I was hoping that Mourinho would have worked on a new system during lockdown that would play to our strengths and not leave players exploited but all we got was the exact same as before.

I would rather give Skipp a go than Winks.
Although as has been said before it doesn't help Winks when his midfield partner is always having to cover the right back.

Not sure what people are expecting, he isn’t a natural CDM, then we have Sissoko who isn’t very skilled, Ndombele who isn’t very fit and no proper CDM and thus no balance. Winks is fine as a squad player, he links well and to be honest currently he is our level.

We got spoiled with Poch and lucky the likes of Dembele peaked around his tenure. We have gone back to where we normally are and unless we invest a lot of cash in the market and do it smartly this is where we will probably be for some time.

I would disagree.
His level is lower Premier League/Championship level, very similar to Mason, Bentaleb, Livermore etc.
However what he has accomplished is to drag the collective downwards to nearer his level since he has been in team.
Replace him, and this team would still be capable of challenging for a Top 4 position, although some refreshing of the more ageing players will be required soon.

I pray to God that we can get a replacement for Winks sooner rather than later. He's useless and pointless. Doesn't score, doesn't assist, doesn't tackle, does do sprints, doesn't track back. Would much rather someone who can at least do one of the above.

If we cant find a replacement I hope that mourinho can find something good about him.

Our centre mid is terrible but at least Sissoko does jobs

Winks is a tidy footballer but you could see why we are interested in Hojbjerg. Winks just lacks the strength to ease players off the ball.

I remember when he was the standout player when we played Real Madrid at the Bernabou. That was 2017 when we had a stacked Midfield. I personally feel we should’ve kept Dembele around so Winks could learn from him more. Winks is a very likeable player and I think he’s been let down by a combo of our recruitment and poor performances, not just by him but our midfield in general. We need to focus on building a more compact ball retention style of play in mid as at the moment we get bullied in the midfield which is never good...

He would suit the Spanish league down to a tee. He plays hide and seek most games. He disappears and the game bypasses him and then all of sudden he does a lovely little hook turn and moves with the ball and plays a simple ball under pressure. He then disappears for another 10 mins and so on.

He should watch footage of Carrick, who at the early stages of his career was heckled by fans for playing too much sideways. Once he came here and went to Utd he moved the ball forward in between the lines and was a key contributor for each side. His positional sense from a defensive position was also a key attribute as you never saw him over commit himself to challenges like Winks.

I agree, he can go quiet and forget he’s on. Carrick was very tidy and played to his strengths which is why he was a success at United, Winks is more mobile and likes to have a dribble her or there. I stand by my comments that he needs more solid players around to get the best out of him. We’ve looked weak in Midfield for the last two years.

You cant learn athleticism though, at least not to the level that Winks needs to get to for the DM role.

Everyone was better than Kane. Winks is a limited player, decent enough for squad rotation but nowhere near good enough to play week in week out.
