He played well. His ability to vary moves from the starting point helped break down a side who had no interest in attacking other than on the counter. I actually think for this type of opponent he’s great in that role, it’s against the top level of opponent who match/ better our use of the ball that he should not be the deepest lying player (if he plays).

Winks was great tonight. I think that people who don't understand why Wink's is such a good footballer really just don't understand how the team game is played.

Saw the first half. Winks was like a conductor conducting an orchestra.

Most interesting was his heat map compared to say Rice the other night. He basically covered the whole of the width of the pitch. However I’m not not exactly sure if that is a plus or not. Is he showing more creating angles or getting pulled out of position honestly I’m not sure.

Its perfectly fine that some of us think he's a good football but also question his role in a starting 11 that should feature better players in Ndombele & Lo Celso. I'm of the opinion you 100% need a defensive midfielder on the pitch, Winks just isn't that. Still a good player and an great option to have as "first backup" to all three spots. But not a guaranteed starter with the other players we have available.

It’s not that Rice or Henderson are bad, they do the defensive job well but the England team looks far better balanced with Winks next to a defensive minded player rather than two defensive minded players.

For me he's simply always making himself available. His role is not a DM but a central link player who operates in front of the defence.
I think he has to play and his partner should be rotated depending on the game, either a fixed DM behind him or a creative CM in front of him.

If we're in a position where we have 3 midfielders that are good enough to put Winks on the bench then we'll be in a fantastic position so I completely agree.

He did well last night. Fair enough, awful opposition but no different to what England usually play in qualifiers and he completely outshone anything Rice and Henderson have done over the last year for England and they get lauded by many.
Southgate would be a complete idiot not to consider him a starter now.

Come off it. Bulgaria were abysmal. Can’t believe the fawning over a decent performance against such poor opposition.

I know people are desperate to be proved right and cling to any bit of evidence but he isn’t the answer in CM for us in the formation used, and until Poch sorts that out we will not improve.

2.5/3 of the way there & I prefer giving Dier a run in DM to see if that can help a bit to heal what ails us.

Because he’s just not very good. Most of our other players actually are good enough to play for us regularly.

I don’t like bashing Winks, I’ve been saying I don’t rate him all along. I’m consistent with my view.

Maybe he will be good enough one day but it won’t be under Poch who plays him as a DM ffs. He can’t defend he can’t attack. He’s a nothing player.

It’s ok you can say I’m right for once, it won’t kill you. ??
You're entitled to say what you believe but back it up with reason.

Who are you comparing Winks too?

I prefer spaghetti

Shit joke

I really dont see it with Rice. Every time I've seen him he is just totally meh and when I see the figures banded about I just laugh. Admittedly Ive seen him mainly int he England games but Winks offers far more impetus and pace as well as perhaps forward momentum from the back

My ideal scenario is that Poch stays and we come through the other side of this a better and more evolved team.

However i would "love it!" if we got @Primativ 's ideal coach/manager to come in and his first act as coach/manager was to give Winks a new 6 year deal, make him captain and say he's going to build a team around him. :ROFLMAO::D

Winks is a good player and had a good game for England. His problem is the same as all our midfielders at the moment. It's what he's being asked to do as a cm.

what do we do? Dier and Wanyama are done, Sissoko Winks and Ndombele are not defensive midfielders and not sure Skipp is ready.

Other than play Winks there or convert Foyth its not the best situation. I understand your also probably referring to the diamond and not just the DM problem.
