I hate what playing the diamond does to us and our performances but after reading that article above, what if Poch has been playing it despite not having the exact players he wants to perform it to the best of its ability?

Seems a bit silly to do so if he has but what if he sees a midfield with Winks at the base of it, ndombele on the right and lo celso on the left of it and Eriksen or Dele at the top?

That sounds pretty potent doesn’t it if we have Kane and son in attack. Plenty of scope for rotating positions within that too.

If Pochettino continues playing a diamond formation, Kane and the other forwards will not have any space and we will continue to play the type of football that plagued the back end of last season. It just doesn’t work for us at all.

Oh I agree. I wasn’t advocating it’s use. I’m still against it.

Kane doesn't seem to play well with Lucas or Son as secondary forwards anyway. He's better alone up top with someone slightly behind (Alli) or forwards on the wings (but still slightly deeper).

Yep, Kane seems to work much better with someone who makes good off the ball runs. For all their strengths Son and Moura are both much stronger at running with the ball at their feet. As it is they just seem to get in Kane's way and visa-versa.

Having more personnel options will certainly help. Lo Celso over Sissoko should improve it considerably. It's horses for courses too. Son and Moura aren't suited to playing as a striker against the bus parkers, but are very handy in top 6/CL matches where there is space to exploit.

I do feel like Poch working on with the 3-man midfield is more with the big games in mind, but it has to be learned somewhere.

In terms of home games against the low block I feel we are better off playing 4-2-3-1 or even a City style 4-1-4-1, get as many attackers on the pitch as possible. I wonder if Poch's post game comments on Sat were an acknowledgement of that.

It's why he works so well with Dele. They don't get in each other's way and Dele times his runs into the box when Kane is drawing most of the attention.

Kane is dangerous when he has space, having players like Son and Moura cutting inside from a wide position drags defenders out of position and give him the space he needs. Playing hem through the centre means that they are all receiving the ball in a similar area. The diamond formation exascerbates this even further by also pushing a midfielder into that area. You really don’t have to be some football genius to spot it, MOTD even picked up on it

The diamond formation worked well against Chelsea once; in subsequent games they kept their fullbacks wide, outnumbered us in midfield and beat us. The variations of 4-2-3-1 work best for us and allow for a better passing game, the last few games have been turgid.

Had a chuckle at Shearer's quip that "you could throw a blanket over the three of them"

Any mention of him in the press conference or team news? I couldn't see anything anywhere
Will Lo Celso make his Premier League debut?

It is the same, we need to assess him. A lot of things have happened in his life now. He arrived with no pre-season, of course he is trying to adapt himself, his physical condition, tactically, settle in a new country in a new philosophy and it is not easy. I can tell you he won't be in the starting XI, but if he is going to be involved or not we need to assess today. We need to see how he is and see the balance on the bench.

I hope we don't throw him in against City when he's just got here. Give him some time and get to know the system/people/area. I'd rather see him come on from the bench in the Newcastle game.

Definitley hope we put him on the bench tomorrow.
Without Dele and Son we need some quality offensive players ready to come on if needed. No pressure, basically everyone is expecting a defeat anyway.

Video doing the rounds on social media: Lo Celso has travelled with the squad to Manchester.

Is this really news? Surely Poch would expect him to travel with the squad? Didn’t Dele, Jan etc sit in the crowd on Saturday? It is all part of his integration into the team.
