Ok let’s be positive. Forster is going to have a remarkable couple of months for us, pulling off great saves and commanding his box at set pieces.

Come 1st Feb we’ll all be looking back at how worried we were tonight and laughing 👍

I think you saying this likely jinxed it. And we will all remember this and most definitely look back and cry.

Austin for UEL now?
I honestly think barring an absolute disaster it'll just be Forster until Vic returns, unless we're already qualified top 8 in the EL with a couple of games left and Ange gives Austin a shot.

The immediate issue really is going to be not having Romero and Bentancur to play out too in the league. Hopefully Romero is back soon. Some teams will not press us high particularly after what we did to City so that might help. Those who do Forster needs to pick times to just go long. I think a lot of the negativity comes from his game against Coventry but he hadn't played in a long time. It's been good to have Europe this season so he has some much needed minutes now and has looked better in each.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

It's a good point. I guess that a run of games might benefit Forster.

I mean, he's not useless. Obviously he's not a first choice for a reason but plenty of clubs have had to go stretches with backups and done well enough.

It won't make it break our season, if the club haven't just winged it and actually did trust him in the role when signing him.

I think everyone wants Forster to do well and is hoping he will, he seems like a good guy to have in the squad. But reality is he is nearly 37, he's older than when Hugo fell out of the first team, and we've seen him in spots for the last couple of years struggling to make saves that require a significant amount of agility, and teams will know this too. At this stage of his career he is not going to improve in this regard with extra games.

Compounded by the amount of games that come during Christmas just makes it a risky proposition to be depending on him for this stretch. You say it wont break our season but we could be out of two cups and well off the pace for top 4 by the time Vicario comes back, and whilst generally i skew much more on the positive side when it comes to discussing the club, i do find our management of goalkeeping options quite frustrating.

For years we've had Vorm/Hart/Forster all ageing keepers with whiteman and austin emerging from the academy but evidently are not viable options as they've barely been trusted with an appearance between them now in their mid 20s. In comparison you have Kelleher who at the same age as whiteman and austin has seemlessly stepped in for Allison at liverpool this season, and has stepped in and done well on a few occasions prior also. He will either take Allisons position in time or become a number 1 at another club i'd guess prem or equivalent, meanwhile we've given Austin a contract until he's 30 and he's yet to have played for us.

I'm a bit more sympathetic to the squad building than others when it comes to "getting a top LW" etc with question marks around the competition, the cost, the desire of supposed transfer targets to actually come to the club etc, but it just feels like we couldve done a much better job to avoid this situation.

Saw a stat on teams going long in prem games this season from goal kicks

We were at 0%!

Thought I’d share that with everyone.

So much negativity the bloke hasn't even put his gloves on yet! He was fine in the last game he played (in the Europa) so let's wait and see maybe? Then if he's shit we can all slag him off.

Didn’t he drop a catch that nearly led to a goal.

He’s also very slow to get down to saves.

He did also have a better game more recently.

He’ll be what he is, an aging reserve level goalie who will put a few good games in but also a few poor ones and he’s a big drop off from Vicario.

Let’s see how it goes, fingers crossed he’s still got some big performances in him.

Listen sunshine, I'm 37 and I've got the agility of a mountain goat. And the morals of a hooker.

Could be, but we have fixtures piling up, FF is old and has has serious injury last season. Could be Ange keeps Austin ready via UEL games should FF get injured. And chances of that go up if FF plays 2 games a week
