Think it's more to do with him being homegrown and the club trained haven't progressed as hoped. That's why we have him but surely we could find a homegrown 2nd choice that's better. In his defence though he hasn't played a competitive game for a year. I would stick with Vicario in all games though unless we qualify in Europa early enough then he can come on. He's basically break glass emergency keeper.

I’d struggle to see how Austin is worse than Forster, after all we did just give him a new contract.

And it’s not like we’ve just found out neither Austin or Whiteman are good enough…. they’ve been with the club for years and are in their 20s now. Whiteman looks way out of his depth and Austin albeit better doesn’t instil any confidence either.

It will be interesting to see if the club have any concerns over Vicario to the point they’re looking for a new number one as well. You simply cannot have a keeper in the EPL that can’t command his own 6 yard box. Take his enthusiasm and shot stopping out of the equation and you’re left with a keeper who’s not good enough. If you look at Raya - he’s not particularly tall for a keeper but he doesn’t look like a flapping machine during corners and other set pieces. Vicario’s like a rabbit in headlights.

He must be a clear 3rd choice. You need a 3rd keeper and he's club trained so it makes sense we signed him on a new contract if he's happy with that role. I don't think we've ever had anything other than a clear 1st and 2nd choice keeper with a 3rd being absolutely last resort.

But surely we’ve given him a contract because we believe he’s capable of stepping up, not to be #1 but if he has to come in for a game or 2 he’ll be fine.

If he really is a clear 3rd choice behind Forster then he’s got no hope of making it here. I’m sure he must be at least on the same level as Forster which is why I don’t get him not being 2nd choice.

I think Gunter is likely to emerge as back up keeper compared with the other three.

Not sure but if he's not costing much then having a cheap 3rd home grown make up the numbers is no bad thing.

I think you are right and I believe they think they’re doing the right thing by not blocking their path.

id argue though that a big club doesn’t behave like that. You address your weakness and let them develop in the background and if they earn their chance they get it.

For all the criticism of including him in the Europa League squad and he's too slow, Forster had a solid game.

Diffused a chance when they were 1 on 1, made a key save and reliable on crosses.

All in all, a good professional performance from our no 2.

Also signals to me that Ange is going for it in the league cup and will start Vicario against City in 6 days time.

Good planning and outcome IMO.

Pretty good positive distribution also

I was for him starting, we can't play Vic every game and then if he gets a knock play someone whom is totally lacking in match practice.
It was a good game for him and I think he'll play more Europa League games now we've 9 points.
Man City next week? Probably not now...Galatasaray.

No idea why he gets so much negativity. What we see of him is such a small sample size compared to what Ange sees in training.
