I'd like to see Lamela and Lo Celso either side of a proper DM in the middle.

I think they could work hard enough when the opposition has the ball and have enough technically to keep/move the ball when we have it.
I like CMs to be all-rounders and Erik doesn't seem to have enough creativity to play in an out and out forward 4 but might have the right balance of all the skills to play in a purely central role with PEH biased towards the defensive role and GLC biased towards the offensive one.

Lamela seems to love the club, the coach likes him and he's fully settled in London. I don't see him starting many matches but he'll be a key squad player and I think he'll embrace that role.

It does feel like Erik Lamela's time at Spurs is coming to an end, but I do hope he gets to complete at least one more season with us. It would break my heart if we went on to win a trophy next season and he wasn't part of the club anymore, it would certainly give a bitter twist to something I've been wanting to happen for about 20 years (okay, let's just say "for over a decade" instead, as I don't want to completely dismiss that cup we won in 2008).

I think calling it ‘that cup’ is still pretty dismissive.

It was the league cup, it was our first trophy of that decade, and we won it by hammering our biggest rivals before coming back against a side we immensely dislike with style and a whole load of passion. To dismiss in any way what is a stand out memory for a whole bunch of us, particularly those who don’t recall much pre Gerry Francis, is a bit shit. It might not be a league title, but it was still a bloody great experience.

Yeah, I know what you mean. and I do remember being very happy about it and loving so much the fact that it was against Chelsea, but I think the reason I tend to dismiss it a bit now is because the Ramos project/era totally fell apart less than a season after that, meaning that such achievement probably wasn't an indicative or reflection of how good we were as a team (which, to me, it's what a cup should reflect). I think if Juande had lasted more time as our coach, that cup probably would hold more weight to me.

Anyway, you're probably right that it's very stupid for me to dismiss it in anyway, considering it has been our only non-exhibition-tournament trophy in about 29 years.

Surely the league reflects how good you are as a team? The cup is a cup - luck and glory!

Would be sad to see him go. I know he seems to divide opinion but he’s been at the club a long time, had awful luck with injuries and other areas of his personal life. There’s a big group of players now that have left or will leave soon and it’s gutting they leave without any silverware. When you consider some of the players (especially squad players) that have picked up medals at other clubs in recent years, it surely shows that measuring footballers by their honours list alone is too simplistic.

For a huge fee at the time £30m he has been a massive disappointment for his stay here at Spurs. Really thought he would do a lot better being our Bale replacement, but it never worked out.

If we sell, good luck to him, seems a good guy..

Lamela, Jan, Eriksen, Dembele, etc etc I can stomach some of these leaving without silverware even if it's a shame but the one I really really worry about losing without silverware is Kane because that would be a travesty. Biggest home grown player we've ever had, and one of the world's best, if he leaves due to us not winning something then it'll be much worse, happy to see others go if it means we become stronger all around and not rely on players who are injured or haven't completely fulfilled potential. I'd be doing everything possible to give Kane and Jose chance of bringing us glory.

Agree with you. 30m now vs. 2014 though - its funny to evaluate, isnt it? If we spent 30m on him 2 or 3 years ago, its become a fairly average fee given his age and record. He has not lived up to the expectations.

Besides his injuries, we've not had the continuation and regular consistency. For example, you'll watch him and see that he can play a good through ball but then he'd take an age to release a pass on other 'easier' occasions.

I think Jose will like a player who is going to release the ball first time or who can at least power forward with it during that transition. Too often Lamela needs to roll the ball and shift it onto his left foot before he passes and then the moment has gone. I've enjoyed watching him at times because he has helped create some superb goals but hes not enough of a goal threat. Someone in his position needs to be chipping in with at least 10 goals across all comps.

It's why the links with Brooks please me as he's a bit sharper and can offer better goal numbers minus the aggression.

Can't go soon enough for me. I know this is very unpopular but I can't stand watching him and feel that he brings very little to the team. He's so frustrating at holding the ball and ultimately losing it. He is one footed, one paced and never been good enough for me.

Im not sure he even tries as hard as people think, plenty of times I've seen us concede when he hasn't tracked a runner (although he isn't the only one guilty of that). He's just one of those frantic players that looks busy but ultimately does it without effect, just runs about a bit.

He gives his all in terms of chasing the ball down but that can lead to giving away stupid fouls.

As you say he holds onto the ball forever and only has one foot.

I admire his effort but we signed him as an attacking player who would both create and score goals. Sadly he does neither.

I love the guy but even I have to admit that it's probably time to say goodbye to Lamela. Such a shame with his injuries that really held him back - really if he was a HG player I'd want him to stay but as he is adding to our issues with foreign players in the squad now is the time for him to move on.

Am I right I thinking he only has 2 years left on his contract? I don’t want him to leave but can understand why the club might move him on considering it’s probably the last time we’ll get a decent fee for him. And it’s unlikely we’ll offer him another contract considering his injury record.
