I dont think Dier was ever fast and it was the injury that set him back and as for playing centre half he has what is required and but for a ref that was conned by Pogba and could not award a penalty any quicker than he did we would not have let a in goal in the two games played .
I heard some sky people saying how Martial had " got his mojo back " when in fact against Dier he was completely anonymous as was Antonio against Dier and Antonio has given us big problems in the past .
He looks stellar at centre half to me and would not be surprised to see him in the next England squad as a centre back .

I will admit I wanted Dier away from our team because of his dire performances for us mid field. He held his own when he had both Dembele then Wanyama to cover and do the donkey work. But his limitation in midfield was exposed when he became the "senior" player partnering players like Winks.

But he has been awesome for us at CB, after the restart. Keeping the likes of Rashford, Martial and Antonio quiet is no mean feat. Keep up this performance for the rest of the season and he will get my vote anytime!

1.) Jose likes him and seems to see him as the future of our defence.

2.) He clearly loves the club and I doubt he would get an offers to move anywhere better.

3.) The club put out interview saying how happy he is at CB https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2020/june/centre-stage-for-eric/

Everything points to him either signing a new contract very soon, of having already signed one. I highly doubt he'll be off anytime soon.

I think Eric has always had the potential to be a shining light at CB. I actually feel a bit sorry for him, as it feels like he lost at least two years of development in that spot. As it was clear when Wanyama joined the club, that Dier would be the second string CDM. He should have made the move to the back 4 at that time. I don't know if it was his decision to stay in midfield or Poch... but it feels like that was two years of his career sorta pissed away. That said, he is still relatively young (26), and has at least another 6 years playing at this level. I can certainly see him being given the captain's armband in the future. And likewise, if he continues to improve, game after game, then Southgate will come calling. As it is not as though we have an embarrassment of riches at CB for England. Maguire? Stones? Who else has cemented themselves as an untouchable selection for England in that role? So it's his for the taking...

Aside from his goal menace in free-kick situations, Maguire is not that much better; and sure he has that ungainly look.

Always liked Eric Dier, even as a DM. It's just that CB is where he excels and we all knew from the moment we signed him, that he could be a future England CB and captain. Not much bullshit about him either, i like that.

The last two games he's really just showing his best and what we all know he's capable of at CB.

Problem was always that our DM-options were limited and we had some good defenders at the club, as to why we tried him at DM and did a solid job. Now Toby and Jan have lost their legs, Dier is clear of his sickness and can really push on.

We still have the DM-problem though and I really hope we see that fixed in the transfer window, as our WIN% with Harry Winks in the team is shit.

It's over to Jose Mourinho now, and the Tottenham manager has revealed England midfielder Eric Dier is set to sign a new deal at the club.
He said: "My boss, Mr Levy, tells me that he wants Eric to sign a new contract and Eric tells me he is more than happy here, happy with his situation, especially now we have a certain idea for him and the team. He wants very much to stay."

Good work from Jose bringing in the straw man guendozi argument to do with Dier's case, it might have no relevance but prior to it we had no defence so was worth bringing into the argument.

Can you elaborate please?

Despite our dreadful performance the other night, I thought he actually played quite well again. Whilst some will say he was at fault for the second goal I think he was left with too many players to mark and that goal was all on Sissoko and Aurier for me. But aside from that he won so many headers, against a proper target man in McBurnie and he’s very comfortable on the ball at centre back. He’s also a natural leader. It wasn’t long ago he was being considered alongside Kane and Henderson as possible England captain by Southgate.

I’d say he’s been our best player in the three games back. He is going to make mistakes as he’s still not played a huge amount of football at centre back but I would persevere with him as think he could be world class. I’d also seriously consider making him captain if he signs a new contract. Never liked a GK as captain (even though i’m a Hugo fan) and Harry just isn’t a captain. He doesn’t lead by example anymore like he did a few years back. Plus Eric Dier is a hard bastard. We need more of that. As good as some of our football was when we were at our best under Poch we also used to fight for the right to party. That’s been lost somewhere.

I agree with most of what you’ve said here, not sure he will ever be world class but I would say he is the only one of our defence I’m happy being a 1st team player next season. A new LB RB and a DM to play with a Dier would look the part imo

If we’d just signed Dier for CB and these were his first three matches we’d think he was an absolute find. Yes there’s the harsh Pogba pen, and Sheffield’s second was far more about everyone to Dier’s right, but he’s been very good. What he needs is the right players to his side and in front of him.

I remember thinking after Toby’s initial showing I was wondering who this one paced ball watcher was, and he turned out ok.

Spot on, with Dier I am seeing improvements and he has the right attitude. We need more leaders in the team. Whilst he may not be one of our best players, he and Kane are the only two natural leaders I see in the team.

Get the structure around him right and I think he will be a huge asset to us moving forward even if he will never be world class.

Have to agree with Wadec and he comes across in games as totally committed which is more than can be said of a few and just to reiterate the holding midfielder role and in the top games two holding midfielders and every player in our team will be given a lift .
The defence because of protection and the attack because they will be able to take more risks knowing they have insurance behind them and so a defensive midfielder is a must . We were at our best under Poch with Dembele and Wanyama were flying to the benefit of the whole team .

I mean, there is something wrong with it though - he's not "terrible" in CM at all. He's not ideal IMO, and a top form Wanyama was always my preferred option, but Dier had plenty of good games in CM before his injury issues, and those issues caused his mobility problems which were a key factor of his lack of success.

But yeah, literally the entire problem is saying things like "he's a terrible CM" - it's hyperbole like that which I was referring to. The classic extremes of football fan opinions, which are almost always ridiculously over the top and dramatic.

Its called an opinion.

Im going to be the lone dissenting voice. I don't think he's particularly good at all. He's pretty slow and his positional sense is suspect (Sanchez also). The "natural leader" stuff is hyperbole (any body can point and shout) imo.

I really hope we bring in a CB in the summer as I don't think a CB pairing regularly involving Dier will work. I get why Jose likes him though, he follows instructions to the letter and seemingly has a great attitude...that goes very far.

He's done pretty well at CB in my opinion. He'd do a whole lot better with a proper DCM in front of him who could organize the midfield defence, and so would Sanchez come to that. As it is, we're back to the days of the Bentaleb/Mason pivot setup which hd more holes in it than Swiss cheese. In fact, it's worse because Sissoko spends half his time babysitting Aurier.
