Perhaps after Martial scoring a hat trick v. Sheff United. Eric will be given the credit for marking out of the game against us .
He also completely dominated Antonio when we played West Ham A player who in the past has given us all kinds of problems .

Also re: Dier - it's almost like he's still just as talented a player as he was when he first came to us and was widely praised - and is finally over his injury/fitness issues and is playing a run of games in his best position?

Almost as though all those numpty's declaring him shit for the last couple of seasons haven't got a clue what they're talking about? Give over! On SC?!

Agreed, I haven’t been Dier’s biggest fan over the last few seasons, and really struggled to see his plus points when he played in midfield. But he’s been one of the big winners since José came in. Regaining his fitness after a nightmare 10-12 months was always going to be tough, and I think stepping back into the centre half role is really helping him. He’s a real leader back there and seems to have really settled into the way we are playing.

I think people are often too quick to decide a player isn’t good enough, when in fact they are just in bad form, playing out of position, or playing through injury. I think Dele is a key example of this, the stick he’s been getting lately is well over the top. Moura too to a lesser extent.

Don't think there's anything wrong with saying he's a terrible centre mid and a good centre back which has been my position all along regardless of his fitness problems.

I mean, there is something wrong with it though - he's not "terrible" in CM at all. He's not ideal IMO, and a top form Wanyama was always my preferred option, but Dier had plenty of good games in CM before his injury issues, and those issues caused his mobility problems which were a key factor of his lack of success.

But yeah, literally the entire problem is saying things like "he's a terrible CM" - it's hyperbole like that which I was referring to. The classic extremes of football fan opinions, which are almost always ridiculously over the top and dramatic.

I think most people were merely commentating that he looked sluggish and lacking confidence the last couple of years. It was hard to tell if it was a blip or was a terminal decline.

Which is fine. He was. It's very rare that a player of his age is in any sort of "terminal decline" though.

My original post was pointing out that the people over the last couple of years who'd been calling him terrible, awful or any of those other phrases were just doing the classic football fan thing of engaging in unhelpful hyperbole. Everything's extreme's these days, all driven by the media and socials, and it's just really, really tiresome.

You'd hope that a club forum which in theory is only populated by supporters of that club, might be the one place where people could discuss things with a reasonable level of insight and objectivity. Obviously that's not realistic as emotions run high.

Anyway this is all just a discussion on semantics, I won't clog up any more of the thread with it.

i dunno, football is incredibly short-termist generally these days. I remember a time, before my walking frame, where a new signing wouldn't be judged till their second or third season at Spurs.. I can stiil recall a 12-year-old me telling my dad that Jason Dozzell come good after his first season. Nowadays a player is written off after a handful of games. That's just the way football's become.

With Dier, his performance away at Bournemouth last season was one of the most shocking I've seen, had we not has two others sent off, he surely would have got a red himself. It was so poor I really did doubt if he had a future here.

The weird thing is that he was awful for such a long time and then suddenly, just before the lockdown, the old Eric Dier reappeared with a completely different level of energy and drive. I can only assume that his illness brought him down very low and it took him a long time to get over it. Whatever, I'm really glad to have him back.

The 'new' Spurs doesn't have an identity yet, but one feels that if we are going to create one, Dier being the leader we're desperate for at centre back is as good a place as any to start.

Well, it may be something to do with actually playing a run of games. You cant get the same fitness as playing the games. Before then, he was playing a game here, a game there, never getting that match fitness.

I’ll still never understand why players coming back from injury dont play U23 games like they used to in reserve football.
