Was expecting him to be much more rusty tonight but he did very well. Red Star didn't pose many problems but Dier and Sanchez worked well together and used the ball well from the back.

When he plays in defence he’s actually a defender who isnt bad on the ball compared to when he’s in midfield he is bang average on the ball.

Think he should to stick to playing CB for now on, in the main.

Loved seeing him back in CB, if he wants a future for us he needs to agree to playing there, he’s a 6/10 CDM but he could be a 9/10 CB, I think that’s what poch said in his book too but dier disagreed and said he wanted to play CDM, but he won’t be getting a game in CDM for us and isn’t up to the level we need but I’d LOVE to see him as our CB to replace toby.

Him and Sanchez for me now as the main pairing for the rest of the season, as long as he’s not another set to be shown the door

His best position is CB, reading of the game is excellant
I would not be adverse to him spending some time there. Not the most mobile but has quite a calming influence (sadly no longer in midfield)

Also could be in his best interest with England being so weak at CB.

Also a plus that he can play LCB,whereas Davinson and Toby have looked, erm, less good there ;)

i think everyone has known he shouldn't be playing in midfield. Not mobile enough, hopefully he really focuses on being a CB again cause that position is there for him

Then he has a bad game in defence and we all say he's too slow to be a centre back. He's better as a midfielde anchor.
Then he has a bad game at midfield and we all say he's never gonna be a top DM
And round and round we go

I have thought his long term future is at CB. Poch needs to read ‘Football Managers 101’ and stick with the same back 4 week in, week out. Poch has gone 93 games without playing a consecutive team (Feb 2018). Madness.

based on Alderweireld and Vertonghen are finished here and IMO they are the next best 2 cb’s at the club

If Poch wanted to really take a leaf out of Sir Alex’s book and regenerate this side, he’d get rid of Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Wanyama, and Eriksen, and turn to the younger, hungrier players who actually want to be here and are not past their peak. Gazzaniga, Foyth, KWP, Sanchez, Dier, Tanganga, Davies, Sessegnon, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Winks, Skipp, Dele, Son, Lamela, Moura, Parrott, Kane etc. We would need to buy, probably a CB and a DCM, and maybe an upgrade at FB. But that could wait until the summer.

Interesting situation ae his contract runs out in 2021. Feels like this season will be make or break for him. Can't imagine we will let him do what Toby and Eriksen have done.

I think some people are getting a bit carried away. Our defense was reasonably solid but Red Star still had 2 almost certain goal opportunities (1 early which Gazzaniga made a great save with his foot, and the 1 2nd half where they couldn't find the pass whilst 3 on 1) and also hit the woodwork. On another night we could have easily conceded 3.
