If we are to persist with diamond it makes complete sense to have Dier at the base. Winks and Sissoko do not offer anything from a defensive perspective and are not setting the tone for our attacking play either. Play our most natural DM there and allow our box to box midfielders to play with freedom.

I understand why Poch wants to play Winks there long term but he is not contributing what we need at present.

Sissoko should not even be starting in that diamond.

Massively underrated.

The only hope I have for him is to quickly find back his fitness, shave a few more pounds off, regain his swagger and proves to SC here his invaluable flexibility.

I think he may be the key to changing our fortunes around.

Poch wants to play a diamond, with the width being provided by full backs. Creativity coming centrally.

Play him in his best role and it allows the full backs to get forward more freely and allows our central players to roam and create angles for each other.

Like you say getting Dier fit and in form is huge for us.

Honestly,

We need him but we need him to do what he does best be a DM nothing else.

As soon as he wins the ball back he should give it to a creative player and he will be fine.

He’s obviously been struggling physically for a while but that is down to illness I think he was suffering from something like IBS etc where he was struggling to control his diet etc and be a sports star

Exactly this, sit him in the centre, ball winner/destroyer/and defensive cover.. The ‘Parker’ role, just straight away give it to one of the other guys once you have it.. We don’t need Dier trying to be Pirlo. It makes so much sense that I can’t even figure out why it’s not happening.

He is back and he is fit. Why can’t he get a game?

When you're out of the picture with Poch it's very hard to get back in.

Dier used to be his favorite (sometimes to the chagrin of us supporters) but he's missed most of 2019 for a non sporting reason.

Rose is probably the only one who was out of favour for a long while but worked his way back in.

He may be fit, but he's barely played a match in the last nine months. He’s obviously gonna be lacking any sharpness. I don’t understand why don’t put players in his situation in the U23 team for a few matches to build up his sharpness.

He gets better the longer he doesn’t play. I really don’t think he’s the answer, he’s too flat/heavy footed to play in the midfield area. I still think he was carried by Dembele who could dominate that area virtually on his own with and without the ball. A peak Dembele is who we miss not Dier

IKR, you'd think they (players out for extended periods) would be banging on the manager/coach's door asking to play in those games, just to get game time in their legs and show a bit of willing.

Players that are out for ages then just come in as they're "fit" are onto a hiding to nothing IMO, as people immediately judge them, and it can be a tough road back if the crowd thinks you're finished and the groans start.

It seems to be a sport science thing because very few clubs do it nowadays. There’s always a little bit of emperor’s new clothes about physical conditioning trends.

But they must know whatever the intensity of training you cannot recreate competition that actual games give. Even if it's just a mental difference it's still a difference.

Yeah, not just fitness, but just a little confidence boost of playing well, or scoring a goal. Can really help.

Dier is a limited player and is certainly someone we could look to improve on, but his ability to drop from midfield into a defensive 3 allowed us to be a lot more solid and give cover for the full backs to attack more. We could really use that solidity this season, even if we're looking to bring in an upgrade sooner rather than later.

I don't understand why he wasn't given an opportunity at RB so far instead of Sanchez and yesterday was an even worse decision. Needs a start and a good performance vs Colchester.

I am starting to believe that he is one of those unsettled players, hence all the "injury problems" that caused his absence from pre-season games.

100% this. Since Dembele left in Jan our results in the league have tailed off massively and that’s not just a coincidence for me.

I think Poch sees him long term as a CB and Dier wants to play CM. But the emergence of Winks, along with the signings of Ndombele and Lo Celso, and the rebirth of Sissoko, has meant Poch is not going to play him in CM. Will be interesting against Colchester to see if he starts, and if so where.
