I’ve said this loads of times. Play him as a pure defensive midfielder and don’t ask him to do things he can’t do and he will flourish. Whether we do will obviously depend on how we set up as I think we will go

Winks ndombele lo celso
Dele Kane Son
If Poche is committed to a midfield diamond then Dier is well suited to a "half-back" role at the base of it. That leaves Ndombélé, Winks, Lo Celso and Sissoko for the 2 and Eriksen, Dele and Lamela as options for the tip.

We certainly have options now - if only it were a system I had any faith in!

Could be the season he steps back to CB ready to replace Toby when he goes. Would be his best chance of a spot in the England team as well going forward.

Something doesn’t seem right with all of these injuries and illnesses with dier.

I really rate him and think he just needs a fitness coach to work on his sprint speed like Kane has.

Wouldn’t surprise me if there is something else wrong with him like an addiction, mental health, etc and the club are protecting him with these vague injury / illnesses.

Don’t see much bromance between him or dele any more either.

Very strange situation.

I’d love for him to turn into a top cb / dm as he promised so much when he joined us and I saw a future captain/leader in him.

I think it sounds like he has been put through the ringer health-wise.
Let us look at/judge him when fit with some games under his belt.
If he has been as poorly as it sounds, let give him a break and revisit this later.

See this is why we don't deserve good things because when we get it we start to speculate with nonsense like this.(n)

Crazy to think with a fully fit squad he’s probably fighting Skipp just for a bench place. In fact it’s probably worse for him.

In a 4231 bench: Gazzaniga sanchez FB winks/Sissoko Lo Celso lamela moura

433: Gazzaniga Sanchez FB Eriksen Lo Celso lamela moura

That’s not even including Sessegnon and Parrott Skipp Foyth

At his best, his on-field romance was with Eriksen - he'd find him with a 1 touch pass and away we'd go.

If Eriksen leaves then Dier still has value at least as a sub as he covers so many positions.

I thought his off-field bromance with Dele was him at his best tbh ??

Plus brutally hacking down anyone on the pitch who picks on Dele lol.

I think the half back needs a better passing range than Dier.

I think at the moment Skipp edges him out as he seems to have the ball playing ability that Poch wants and perhaps more tenacity.

Poch has been quoted before as saying he could be England’s best CB but he has to believe it. I think that is where the emphasis will be this year and we’ll see if he gets a spot there in cup games.

Could possibly see some minutes at right back this season too. Either way, it's time to move him back to defence.

Was so under appreciated all last season & this summer I was laughed at for putting him in starting line ups.

We so clearly need him back fit and in the lineup. He allows us to have our offensive freedom while still being strong enough defensively. No one is scared of Winks and Sissoko. Fuck around with the ball in midfield and Dier will put you on your ass.

Time for the Ndombele/Dier double pivot to begin.

Also, I legitimately think he's a better offensive player than Winks as well. He's much more likely to put a ball over the top or put in a nice cross.

i'm not wholly against dier coming back into midfield given our current form but lets not gloss over his last appearance there where he waddled around and was completely overrun by bournemouth, not to mention being lucky not to have given away a penalty and was also fortunate not to have been sent off, all before being hauled off at half time. that game was hardly a one off poor performance either.

Dier is not the answer in central midfield. To flat footed, gets passed around and can’t play on the half turn or in tight areas. It should be Ndombele and lo Celso, or Ndombele and Sissoko for me depending on the opposition.

Sissoko for me is not a footballer. He makes a good battering ram but has no ability to use the ball. Ndombele is the player for that role with Dier perhaps sitting behind to make a back three with full backs pushed forward. I hope Lo Celso is the answer but like I thought all summer we really need another quality midfielder. Winks, Skipp et al are just others in a long line of average players we produce who lack that special something. To be honest Toby is easily the best passer in the side and Verts maybe the most creative outside of Eriksen and Dele (nearly forgot him probably because his injury seems worrying)

Winks and Sissoko are poor yes, but Eric Dier has been terrible for a few seasons now. Not a CM for me. We need to find a replacement for Wanyama.

Honestly,

We need him but we need him to do what he does best be a DM nothing else.

As soon as he wins the ball back he should give it to a creative player and he will be fine.

He’s obviously been struggling physically for a while but that is down to illness I think he was suffering from something like IBS etc where he was struggling to control his diet etc and be a sports star

We need him back to his best for the teams sake.If he can get fit and back on form a pivot of Dier/Ndombele would benefit us greatly

He was the heart of our team for Pochettino's best few seasons here, starting 178 of Poch's first 200 games.

He gives us on-pitch flexibility, allowing us to create a back three out of possession, the occasional cracking cross/long ball, and he has always been one of the players who gets what it means to play for Spurs.

Right now, he'd allow NDombele to roam with a bit more freedom and, despite being somewhat limited, at least he'd go and fuck some people up.

If we are to persist with diamond it makes complete sense to have Dier at the base. Winks and Sissoko do not offer anything from a defensive perspective and are not setting the tone for our attacking play either. Play our most natural DM there and allow our box to box midfielders to play with freedom.

I understand why Poch wants to play Winks there long term but he is not contributing what we need at present.
