I still remember Dier's first game/goal - injury time winner v. West Ham - at the time it happened I just recall seeing a tall white guy flash across the middle, and then round Adrian for the winner. Took a second to realize that was Dier - who was playing RB at the time.

We signed Dier 5 years ago today

Was he better or worse than expected?
Better. Good, adaptable defensive prospect who became a beast at DM alongside The Moose. Injury hit 2018/19 but I hope a summer of rest and recovery from injuries may see him evolve again.

this is a guy we signed for peanuts and is now a regular in the England squad how could he possibly be worse than expected I mean that’s ridiculous

I have a feeling Eric might be used on the right hand side of defence at times this season, a sort of RCB-RB hybrid position. There's some discussion in the Sessegnon thread about the possibility of an asymmetric system where the LB is allowed to bomb forward while the three remaining defenders stay back and across, with Foyth the primary candidate for the role. If Poch really does intend to play that way on a regular basis then Dier is a good candidate to offer rotation/cover there.

This could all be null and void if we end up playing with a conventional back four with Aurier or KWP at RB, but I find the idea interesting at least.

People forget how good he is. Signed him for basically nothing and now at age 25 he’s already made 210 Tottenham appearances playing numerous positions and earned 40 England caps.

Hope he gets over his recent odd bout of injuries and illness. He’s still a crucial player for us.

He was my favourite player at the start, but the last two years have been pretty poor between form and injury. He'll need to really earn his place this season, and everything I've seen from him says he's the kind of player who likes a challenge. Fingers crossed.

He's vitally important role in the squad to provide the defensive balance to our side. Hopefully now that we got multiply ball players he can focus on keeping his game simple and doing the dirty work.

A lot of you basing your opinions of Dier on recent memories and sentiments. Dier was good for us especially in that season where he first played in midfield with Dembele. Without Dembele and a fit Wanyama beside him, his limitations have been exposed. The team as a unit have improved, but in my opinion Dier has not as he seem to struggle to keep up resulting in vital mistakes, injuries aside.

Saying that I still believe has a lot to offer defensively as a squad player.

[EDIT] Playing for England is not a seal of approval. Penalty against Columbia (I think) aside, he was poor in the World Cup where even Henderson of all people rightly took over in the midfield as he turned out to be better

Too bad he didn't get a proper preseason, but at least now we have options that will let him get properly match fit before appearing again.

Can’t pretend he’s my favourite player. But a versatile solid squad member. There’s no question when he’s at his best we are much more solid defensively although we lose a bit going forward. He think he gets a bad rap and might be silly to say but don’t think he’s surname does his image much good lol.

Definitely fallen and at 2 years I’m surprised weren’t rumours of a sale. He’s now 4th choice CM with Skipp hot on his tail. Definitely a conundrum if you offer new contract. Feel his England place is in serious jeopardy although Southgate loves him.

The conundrum is that if Belgian centre backs go at end of season we will need him there.

I always think the team you start the season with is very different to the team you end it with.

is he back in training?

hope he can get into form and show some form this season. he looked extremely slow and out of form towards the end of last season, but i hope that was all down to his injuries and struggles

Concerns over his fitness but for me Dier remains a very good, extremely versatile player with better to come. Hope the guy has a great season. We need players who want to be here and fight for the club

I’ve said this loads of times. Play him as a pure defensive midfielder and don’t ask him to do things he can’t do and he will flourish. Whether we do will obviously depend on how we set up as I think we will go
