Eric Dier

Im going to be the lone dissenting voice. I don't think he's particularly good at all. He's pretty slow and his positional sense is suspect (Sanchez also). The "natural leader" stuff is hyperbole (any body can point and shout) imo.

I really hope we bring in a CB in the summer as I don't think a CB pairing regularly involving Dier will work. I get why Jose likes him though, he follows instructions to the letter and seemingly has a great attitude...that goes very far.
That's what most footballers do ... lol

I didn't think I would have to make this point explicit, but I guess I will. He follows instructions and has a good attitude. Unfortunately, I do not believe he is of the requisite quality.
Like most footballers, you'd want that. Aurier is your poster child for not doing it.

He's probably been our best player since the restart, not sure what he has done massively wrong other than the pen against United.

I guess when you say requisite quality I pose the question, who is?

I thought he was very poor vs the Blades and OK in the other matches. I suspect he gets a pass because he appears to care and does the pointy shouty thing.

Regarding being the requisite quality, I don't think any of the current crop of CB's are good enough. I'd probably play Toby & Sanchez and move Dier to RB (anything to stop Aurier getting a game).

Summer is going to be really important, but as I said upthread, if we persist with hm at CB, I think we'll leak goals due to his lack of pace on the turn. We'll see...

You need pointy shouty - we haven't had anyone that organises us in forever. Why this thumbing the nose of something that all the great teams have had when attempting to win things?

As for on the turn - his partner might have a bit of pace - horses for courses. Just seems a gripe at Dier to go against the flow, weird.

Not a gripe mate. Just an opinion.

Like most of our games the defence was left ih the lurch with no defensive midfielders at all when we have played at our best in the past with two defensive midfielders . It is really not fair in my eyes because in the Sheff Unt game we were almost playing four defenders and six attackers with very little if not any steel in the middle of the park .
Defensive stability will only come about when you can control the midfield otherwise you are constantly under pressure .
Even city have one or two defensive midfielders like Fernandino and Rodri and gundogan so they can pick to one or two from three depending on the opposition and that is where their solid base has its foundations .
Guess what ? we dont have any defensive midfielders and so laying the blame on our defence for our form is badly displaced .
Unfortunately we have to struggle thru for the rest of the season but I am sure Jose will correct this next season .
The blame for this lies with Poch releasing Dembele and the bad injury to Wanyama .
Under these circumstances I see Dier as our best player at the moment considering what he has to contend with which seems almost like a 4 defenders and 6 attackers as the formation .

Probably my MOTM tonight. He was the more aggressive CB in the pairing and dominated Richarlison and Calvert Lewin, any ball lumped up to them he was on in a flash and really tried to unsettle them.

Might suit him better as Sanchez usually plays that role but imo lacks the fire to really stick his foot in.

Did think it would be a long one. You just can't have that going on under any circumstances, it could very easily lead to someone getting hurt in the chaos.

They took their time deciding on that.

Jose's press conference should be fun.
Apparently there was first a police investigation and they had to wait for that to be over, and then an independent committee was formed due to it being an unusual case (Alasdair Gold). But to be honest it's good timing. We're out of the CL race anyway, have no excuses if we can't grab Europa without him, and he doesn't miss the start of next season.

So basically the rest of the season - funny it comes now.

Yeah, but we're just unlucky, nothing to do with agenda.

Scandalous!, I guess we can have our excuses ready now if the next few
results don’t go our way. He’s the reason we’ve looked a lot more solid in our 3 home games since lockdown imo.

What’s the point of suspending him for 4 matches when there’s no crowd to run into. However is he going to learn his lesson? :cautious:

FA in deliberate attempt to derail our season shocker.
They had months to make a decision on this, but waited until he was a regular fixture in the starting line-up.

Derail our fucking season? As if the train hasn't jumped off the tracks and crashed through several buildings already. Yeah it's annoying they delayed it this long, that is indeed poor but let's not pretend like it wasn't fucking ridiculous for Dier to try and fight some fans.
