Looked a bit quicker/more athletic than in the last 12 months or so, which helps him a lot I think.

The Dier of 2016 was actually pretty mobile and that's when he was at his best imo.

He was great and it's hard to look good at CB without a proper DM to help out. And we invited ton of pressure.

Really good performance last night. He was unlucky to concede the penalty, but I guess when you put your hands on someone in the box, they are always going to go down.

He had a good game. Unlucky on the penalty I thought. I could tell he was in trouble as soon as he appeared in the left back spot instead of Davies. Had he not got pulled out of position I doubt he’d of made the challenge.

All with the charge hanging over him. Ridiculous that hasn’t been sorted.

Played very well, neither challenge were pens, one tackle he did was unreal

Unfortunately the interpretation of a foul when it's in the penalty area has now become 'contact'. Many fans accept it but I never will. I don't know what 'simulation' is meant to be if it isn't throwing yourself on the ground when you get touched on the shoulder like Pogba was, but it happens every game and people seem OK with it.

On Eric Dier, he looked like his old self again and fingers crossed he's out of the woods with illness and form. Top class performance.

Yea agree thought he was good but considering he gave away a penalty (yea pogba made the most of it but it was a very naive challenge and I would be raging if we didn't get given that) I don't consider it any better than good as such a big mistake does impact on the performance.
He's too old and experienced to make sure and decision, little point in being good for 89 mins if you're going to do that.

I didn't want to watch the replay of the pen decision last night because of emotions 'n all that, but having viewed this 5 or 10 times (keep in mind the guys monitoring VAR would have seen it as many, if not more times than this, and from different angles) he was definitely unfortunate to not have it overturned. I can certainly understand Moss awarding it in real time, however when you consider Pogba initiates the contact on Dier's shoulder, and then hangs a left leg there really isn't much Dier can do. It's definitely in the category of "sometimes they're given, sometimes they're not", but it's not as cut and dry as I thought it was last night.

Again, Dier had a great game, so I'm not putting any blame on him at all.

If that was Harry Kane going down from that challenge, no way does he get a penalty. The ref was desperate to give United something.

Im sure we’ve had similar situations where this has happened to us this season and not been given the penalty. Dele v Southampton away springs to mind and that was much more clear cut.

It’s what makes the game in this country so frustrating, different officials interpret decisions in different ways. There’s zero consistency. I don’t think referees have ever been as inconsistent as they are now. I can only imagine how annoying it must be for players, so in a way they might as well go down in the area because they don’t know if they’ll get a penalty or not from one game to the next.

The officiating of games is one thing which made me not miss football while it was gone. There just isn’t a consistent level playing field. They are just all so bad. That’s the only consistency!

That block was awesome... the thing is - when our team is backed up in their 18 yrd box - shit will happen - this happened

Sanchez made a great block as well when Rashford (I think) was 2 yards out and we managed to get the ball away.

It happens every match now. Our players do it too but that's equally unacceptable to me. A foul should be a foul, not an attacker sticking his leg out to initiate contact or a player crashing to the ground because somebody brushed his arm.

I think the pen is a classic example of what frustrates fans nowadays. If you watch 80s football players would get kicked but many would only go down if the force was enough to take them down. Not to say there weren't any divers of course.

But nowadays the slightest contact and players just jump on the floor. Dier has grabbed at him so I begrudgingly accept it's a pen. In Pogba's defence if he doesn't jump on the floor the ref won't give it.

I don't really see what the difference is between a professional foul and diving to get a penalty. They are both types of cheating that seek to gain or prevent a goal and yet one is condoned by just about everyone and the other is generally accepted as a red card offence. I would love to see simulation, including exaggerating the effects of contact, punished by red cards. Unfortunately though, it seems that cheats do prosper in this respect which isn't what I want to see.

Very good yesterday. Was confident in every tackle he made. I have to admit I put a cross on him but that was very encouraging performance. We should also notice that the wole team was very compact and defended well as a unit, that was surely big help for our defenders.

Eric Dier should be England's Number one centre half if he just took on board the advice Porch gave him three years ago to concentrate on playing at the back. He has lost the last two seasons of his career believing he is a centre midfielder.

I thought he looked good last night but as I said in the match rating thread he usually does for 99 per cent of a match and then chucks one in. Leverkusen at home and Utd away come to mind but there has been more.

It's also easy playing at centre back when you have no space to defend behind so everything is in front of you. If we ever become an expansive team again then I think he will start to struggle but that doesn't look like happening anytime soon.

Hopefully he can continue to improve but with Jan leaving we still need another centre half and a left sided one, so hopefully it will be one of the positions we still improve on in the transfer window.
