Regardless what you think of Dier, we have too many players who either have run down their contract or are in that 12-24 month bracket and we need to at the very least keep players so we can actually make money from selling.

Spurs is back, baby! Was a nice few months forgetting we have Mourinho at the helm and how dreadful we were before the virus. Too good to be true, of course. It's now all hitting home. Chelsea already securing signings for 130M +, Man Utd going for Sancho and we're having to take a bank loan in order to stay afloat, more or less. Oh, and we're giving Dier a new contract. Nice one.

Skipp and Tanganga next, but this still looks compared to other top6 clubs

Yeah it was the Vert, Eriksen and Alder debacle I was more referring to, though aside from Eriksen it has worked out reasonably well.

Should definitely tie him down and get him going at CB, he’s potentially our best defender and if he is past his injury issues has a good 5 seasons as our first choice centre back in him.

I think he and Sanchez could make an excellent first-choice CB pairing. I've been hugely critical of Dier over the past few years but have always maintained he could still make it as a CB. His main problems in midfield are that he's not mobile enough to cover the ground necessary, can't take the ball on the half turn, and isn't a good enough dribbler to withstand a press. In the back line with all of the play in front of him, none of those are really an issue.

The form he showed before the virus hit is enough for me to believe he still has what it takes, and at his best he's easily a CL-quality player. We were just setting him up to fail by playing him in a position he wasn't suited to any longer.

Eric seems to me a marmite player...you love him or hate him...I love marmite...we always cry out for a ‘Roberts’ type player..may not be a ball player but someone who you would have standing in the trenches next to you...he’s one of them...and every team needs one..

No-one questions his attitude or that he’ll put himself about, it’s just since his injuries and illness it looks as if he’s running in Marmite.

I get that but I think he’s earned another season at least.(maybe see how he goes to the end of this one first though......)....

I'd write a comment but I'm Zoom drunk and you've just about nailed it.

Our best defender? I guess he "potentially" could be, but it's extremely unlikely. He's a physical guy for sure, but in terms of positional / technical ability and stamina he's been so poor this season. In fact, I'd say he should be at the bottom of the pecking order right now IMO. He has struggled in nearly all of his appearances at CB this season. His performance at CB versus Sheffield earlier this season was one of the worst I've seen from one of our center backs in recent seasons [way worse than Foyth v Norwich IMO]. He struggled to piece a single forward pass together and just constantly gave the ball away. He also could not mark McGoldrick if his life had depended on it. He was extremely fortunate to have Sheffield's first goal ruled off as he was asleep for a simple tap in. He was also very poor at CB against Wolves @ home and I remember was responsible for the first goal we conceded after absolutely fluffing a simple clearance.

I'd love to see Dier come good. I am a firm believer that no judgement should be made for any players [Dier, Foyth, Davies, etc] until we see them play in our fully fit squad when football resumes. For me he was always a better DM than CB and was an absolute unit for us in 15/16. Sadly I think the reality is that he's just past it now. But I'd love to be completely wrong.

Seems like a new contract is in the midst (he was asked if there was any spurs news)

I would be very happy for him to commit. Having said that I really want the Dier we saw 3 years ago. The one since has not reached the heights. If that were the case I think he can be a fantastic CB for us.
I agree with people who have criticised his performances over the last 18-24 months but I genuinely believe he is far more talented than most give him credit for.

Yeah this is one area in which Levy has actually done well recently. Other than Son, none of our best players are out of contract until 2014.

Sign up the promising youngsters (Skipp, Tanganga, maybe Foyth) and perhaps a few useful squad players like Dier, Lamela.

We really need to upgrade on Lloris, Sissoko, Aurier, Rose and Vertonghen anyway so thank God they're the ones whose contracts are running down.

Meanwhile if any of our big players do force a move we'll get some serious cash rather than Eriksen money.

Regarding Dier, I think he can be a solid option if he commits to being a CB and accepts that he'll never be a top DM again.

He has the qualities to be a solid, perhaps even excellent, CB if he can knuckle down and work on it.

Sounds about right.
