The problem with 4231 is that it revovles around Eriksen, and Eriksen is on the way out. IMO we won't bring in a comparable player (and Lo Celso is a CM for me), so we therefore have to adopt a different system. With the depth we now have in CM and the (hopefully) far greater creativity from deeper, I can see us moving to 433 with Dier in the middle but dropping into a back 3 when we're attacking. It's tailor made for Sessegnon, Lo Celso and Ndombele.
Perhaps more of a 4-1-2-3, with Dier being the DM, N'dombele and Lo Celso being the 2 with Winks covering all 3.

I think at the moment we should try Ndombele as the "10" in the 4231. Long-term, I think he's more box-to-box, but at the moment he's struggling to get up and down the pitch till he gets fitter, and he's also getting caught dribbling in deep areas.

But he can beat a man, he can see a forward pass, he can close down players. It would be a a different type of player in there, but I'd like to see it tried.

Mad to think that Utd we’re willing to pay £50m for him just a couple of seasons ago.

Wonder what his and Deles valuation would be now?

I said in the Alli thread that we could play GLC as a false right winger as the primary playmaker with Alli as second striker coming from the '10' position, Son on the left with the double pivot behind. Has a nice balance to it especially with the more reserved Davies at left back and someone more adventurous at right back.

I think until GLC is back though we should just use Lamela in that role rather than pushing up Ndombele as a 10.

Dier could be an absolute bargain for anyone looking to play him at centre back. If he wants to be here he has to stay as he'd be as good a replacement as we can get for Toby.

At the moment Dele is playing so poor I'm not sure I'd put him in. Lamela is playing well from the right, and putting Ndombele a little hjgher would give us someone who can dirbble and beat his marker close to the box. It's a little like how Modric was eased into the PL by playing from the left.

I think Ndombele just needs to work his nuts off and get properly fit. In the meantime he needs to learn very quickly about the pace of the EPL and how little time he's going to get on the ball. IMO a midfield 3 will give better options to move the ball around in deeper areas to create angles for forward passes. At present though, we seem to be stuck in the dreaded diamond system, often relying on Eriksen who is way off the pace. Can't wait for GLC, to get on the pitch either in CM or at 10 in all honesty.

With the players we have in our squad, 352 is probably a system that might suit. With Dier in the centre of the back 3, he has the in game intelligence to push into midfield if we need to transition mid game and vice versa. We could also have a midfield of Winks, Lo Celso and Ndombele and a front 2 from Kane, Son, Dele, Lamela and Moura. I also think Foyth, Sanchez, Tanganga and Davies would be more comfortable in a back 3. Wing backs would be KWP, Aurier, Rose and Sessegnon.

A 352 of Lloris - Verts, Dier, Sanchez - Sessegnon, Ndombele, Winks, Lo Celso, Aurier - Son, Kane could just as easily switch to 433 mid game.

Getting back on topic, Dier gives the flexibility to do this and also we need to become hard to beat again as I feel we are in danger of becoming Spursy again.

Without Lo Celso and Sessegnon, I'm not sure it would work immediately but once everyone is fit then it is definitely something I would like to see.

Basically playing the most attacking role in a midfield three and playing the 10 in a 4231, there's not much difference. I'm just saying we should take away some of Ndombele's defensive responsibilities at the moment, get him up the pitch, get him on the ball and doing those sick dribbles that break opponent's ankles..

The guy has been underused because he's been unavailable for so many games in the last year. Sissoko is a machine considering the amount of games he plays every season but the others (including Winks) are fragile. The fact Ndombele gets injured immediately after signing makes me really question our physiological set up at the club.

I'm more worried about the neurological set up of our fans.

be good to see him back in bolstering the defence tomorrow. He also has leadership qualities.

We have looked too open in front of the back 4 recently. God, how I miss the spectacle of him and Dembele making mincemeat out of opposition attacks.

Defensively, we look weaker without him in the team. He might be boring sideways, but Makalele did the same and was brilliant. We need to accept we need that type of player

I like Dier and want to see him back playing for us at his best but he probably won’t solve all our problems immediately and has looked off the pace at a number of points once thrown back in. Couldn’t hurt to try though. As with other positions circumstances have turned two top DMs into two seemingly crocked players, the iceberg was there but we didn’t turn
