I’d love to see this formation which has the extra man at the back to provide cover for Porro and Udogie when they charge forward
Vicario
‘Romero Draguisin VDV
‘Bissouma or Bentancur
Porro Kulu Maddison Udogie
Son Solanke

To me this plays to everyone’s strengths ( including Son by the way ) but I guess Ange would never do it. What do people think ?
Doubt Ange would ever play this as he’s really honing his current system and we’d not have suitable back-ups to barely any of these positions but as an idea I agree it would play to all of those players strengths.

i think there are midfield back ups in Bentancur, Gray Sarr, Bergvall.
centre backs Davies and Phillips
strikers Richarlison Moore Johnson Odobert Lankshear
wing backs Spence, Gray and possibly the wingers

In fact I don’t think there would be any less back ups than for our existing formation

Most of those are wingers not strikers.

Phillips is out on loan. We have 1 back up cB which is suicide with a 3cb system.
Gray definitely isn’t a wing back you need to be explosive as a wing back

I’m not sure that Gray is any less suitable as a wing back than he would be as a full back in our present formation which places a huge demand on the speed of our full backs to get back with inadequate cover. ‘As well as Spence as back up there are also many wingers who have in the past been converted to wing backs. With Odoberts speed he could be a contender. And I think our Centre backs are much more likely to get injured in the current system when they are so often left exposed. And worse case there is Dorrington as additional back up. As far as strikers are concerned Kulu can also cover there so that gives you Richarlison, Lankshear and Kulu ( as well as Werner if disaster strikes)

Overall I don’t really see that our lack of quality cover is any worse under a 3-1-4-2 system than under our system which although nominally is a 4-3-3 can often be a kamikaze 2-5-3. And the bottom line is that we would concede for fewer goals with 3 at the back and a designated number 6 than we have been doing since the early part of last season.

You’ve named a lot of either weak, unavailable or out of position players there

He’s not an explosive player though? In the formation you want us to try the wing backs keep the width and need to ge fast quality dribblers. Currently in our system as a rb he’s playing as a 8 basically which suits what he’s about.
Dorrington… really… a player who’s played no minutes in men’s football?
Yes wingers can be converted but come on to change system like that you need a full pre season

I take the points you are making and they have validity but we saw what happened last season when either Porro or Udogie got injured and as much as you say Gray is not a wing back I don’t think he is an adequte replacement for Porro under Ange's style of football either.
