The thing with Dele is that he is an instinct player. The more you ask him to do, the more he has to think about, and then the less effective he becomes. He had far too much put on him from a defensive pov under Poch and that means he can't just do what comes natural. He was far from the only one either. Trips hated his role and more so the responsibilities he was asked to do as a full back. He couldn't understand why he was being told to play so high up the pitch when his delivery from deep was so good, and he didn't have the pace to recover. He was vocal about it, and that's why he was moved on.

Thing is pochs philosophy was actually very simple in the beginning. Hard and high team press, move the ball quick flood the box on a counter attack. The the last 18 months or so it started to get all technical with each player being given lots of different duties. Throw into the mix formation changes and players playing regardless of form and that's why they lost faith.

It really is weird why Poch seemed to decide to over complicate things so much.

Trippier as an example as mention was stunning with his attacking play during his earlier seasons so why change that?

It does just smack of arrogance / stubbornness, which is a real shame as I so wanted Poch to be with us a long time but you could just tell this season and a fair bit of last season something just wasn’t right.

There's a metrics tool on here that lets you compare Dele against other players and his performances this season. He outperforms Mount and is fairly similar to Maddison. Neither of those two have Dele's physicality though.

Dele on Mauricio
“I think it’s so clear what Mauricio meant to the players. He helped me grow a lot. I came here as an 18-year-old and had my ups and downs here. When I found out I was upset and I wanted to speak to him. I went to see him. I’ve seen him more than my family over the past five years. After I heard the news I couldn’t wait to see him. I was very upset. It wasn’t so much a conversation about football more two friends having a chat.
“I would be lying if you didn’t blame myself when it first happened rather than looking at the bigger picture. We had a great journey. You can’t help but feel like you’re to blame because you’re out there but I realised I gave 110% always.”

Good god I love Dele.

Was the under the breath mutterings and head shakings at the substitution anything to be worried by? I hope not.

The last sentence was after Matt Law asked him if he blamed himself for Poch getting the sack!

What a prick that guy is. You don’t ask questions like that.

So the first thing Jose says to Dele is "Are you Dele or Deles brother" I like that, it shows a level of directness that the best motivators have, no bullshit, no indirect rubbish via the media.

That being said can Deles brother play as a right back?

He played very well but West Ham gave him acres to play in and were generally pretty awful so I'll hold fire on Dele being "back" but it's positive.

Pretty fucking depressing in hindsight that we were all annoyed he was constantly being caught out of position. Similar to Aurier this season at times.

That’s the version I’ve been calling, somewhat unfairly, Dele Dally.

I thought he was good in his run of games since Watford. He just needs matches to get back to his best. Playing in the correct position too will help.

Dele actually speaks really well. Love the way he actually takes time to put some thought into his answers. Comes across quite intelligent, unlike the usual generic crap spouted off in most interviews.

I am derailing the thread, but Trippers problem was less about being caught out of position, but more about him being absolutely terrible 1 v 1 defensively and added some terrible technical mistakes last season which were severely punished. We effectively utilised Sissoko as a defensive babysitter for him because we needed his passing from deep as well as higher up the pitch.

Even Simeone wants him high up the pitch, and his game at Burnley was about spamming crosses, so I really doubt he can have had any issues with crossing the half way line.

The issue wasn’t asking Trippier to get forwards, it was asking him to hit the byline and cut the ball back, when he was always much better off sitting deeper and swinging in crosses from there.

You can see it coming back with Dele, when he's fit and playing with confidence he opens his stride up and glides past players and also looks a step ahead of the defenders .
30 mins in the 2nd half he was a joy to watch, hope in continues because I think he's top drawer
