Central defence is the main position where players get better with age. CBs tend to peak at 29-32. Defenders who rely on positioning rather than pace can play until they are 35- see Naybet with us for a great example. Jonny Evans, at 32, is now one of the best CBs in the league at Leicester as he is so consistent. Young centre backs make mistakes. So I would expect both Sanchez and Tanganga to make a lot more mistakes than Jan and Toby. The worrying thing for us last season was that our experienced defenders also made a lot of individual mistakes. After a good rest and a proper rest and his contract sorted I expect Toby to be one of the best defenders in the league once more. And if we want the best defence in the league we need to sign another player in his peak years to partner him - I'd go for Koulibaly. Chuck in the experienced Meunier at RB and we'd have a very experienced back line that should not make many mistakes and keep lots of clean sheets. If I am dreaming then Mourinho would also pick up a proper DCM who can provide a proper shield to the back 4. Tanganga and Sanchez are the future, but if we want to challenge for the title next year (we do don't we?), then we need to spend on a new partner for Toby.
