When he came to Tottenham he looked sure in his position and he looked sure on the ball, but you watch him now with the ball he is hesitant ad cant wait to pass it off (it could be Poch) also playing the high line is not easy.To mark someone and play the high line is very difficult as both of those things are the opposite of each other. You have to have a feel that you are not too far away from the marker to recover if you are playing the high line and stepping forward when the time is right. I think he is just spooked.

IMO he has all the attributes to be a class defender though but it's what's between his ears that holds him back.

You look at someone like Maguire for example who some might say attribute wise should be the worse defender but he's calm on the ball, positions himself well, knows when to stick a leg out and when not to etc. These are the things that separate an average/good centre back to a great one.

I think its not necessarily whats between his ears,I think he is not playing his own game naturally like he did in his first games. Poch maybe micromanaging them and that's why you see this robotic passing between the back line. Its to do with confidence. When you are confident you would take the managers word as ideas and do your thing within the general idea of what he wants, you make decisions, but of you are not confident you will follow exactly what he says and that will take away any instincts about the game you have. He is spooked.

I got a lot of stick saying I think Sanchez been awful so far this season.
Theres been alot of bad positioning, errors, losing ball in dangerous places. Cant see what some of you see in him.
Can he come good? Yes maybe. But im not a fan of letting him play until he does. He needs to be put on the bench, work hard and show himself next time he gets the nod.Our defense has gone from one of the best to the worst of the top teams.
That’s not down to Sanchez that’s down to trippier when he was here

Edit: and no chance do we have the worst defence out of the top 6 Arsenal, Chelsea, United all worse

He had a great debut season and imo has been solid whilst here

I think people are trying to scapegoat him for whatever reason but he shut down Aubameyang in the first half of the derby, second he had a tougher time but That’s down to a lot of factor not just him. I think experience will do him very well and I hope he doesn’t let any criticism get to him

I hate this notion that any player that is consistently criticized on here is being scape goated. I do think Sanchez was getting some unfair criticism but he does have about 1 big mistake in him per game. Everyone thought the second you picked Jan back in the center all would be well... and we still looked shaky overall, but to me thats 100% down to the midfield duo.

Yeah it's called scapegoating...we always have one - this season it's Winks and Sanchez, last season Trippier

That’s the thing Sanchez imo hasn’t been constantly criticised until this season. I think people need to have some perspective, he was very very solid in his debut season playing with Vertonghen whilst on the right side. He’s been shifted to the left for Toby and that’s probably where the mistakes are coming from.

He is a good CB and people trying to scapegoat him for not playing on the left side as well as he does on the right is unfair

Why is any criticism, scapegoating?
It's only scapegoating if there is unfair and an abundance of criticism relative to other players and the team in general.
This thread is about Sanchez, good or bad. It doesn't reflect the comparable situation vis a vis other players on the team unless someone wants to bring in that perspective.

Physically he has all the attributes but mentally he isn’t quite at it yet. Positioning and reading of the game needs work.

At the moment he’s an ok CB, but only because of his physique.

I said in the summer this is a big season for him. He needs to show clear signs of improvement to stay in the team and to indicate he is developing into a top CB.

With Verts and Toby nearing the end of their spurs careers, Sanchez was signed for big money to be the replacement, hence why this season he needs to show he can be what he was bought for. It’s his third season after all. He’s still young for a CB but at the same time from the age of 24 to 26 is when you’d expect he starts showing clear development into a top class CB. If he’s still faffing around and all over the place this season and next, he probably won’t ever be good enough.

I think it’s fair to say the jury is still out as to whether he will be good enough to build our next generation defence around.
