I think its pretty clear he doesn't have his heart in it anymore. Maybe thats because of Madrid interest or maybe thats because he's lost faith in Ange and the club, maybe its a bit of both. But if that is the case we need to sell him and I am a big fan of his. My only concern is if it ends up being another long winded transfer negotiation that ends up taking all window and inevitably leaves us scrambling last minute.

On the plus side there are a lot of very attractive RCB out there at the moment if we wanted to replace him. It's LCB that are far more tricky.

Also contractural situation: wouldn't be surprised if either A) the club hasn't even offered him improved terms and a longer deal, thereby making him feel like the club doesn't see him here long term, or B) we have offered him a new deal but it's well below what equivalent profile centre backs earn at other clubs, again making him feel unwanted, or that the club is not serious about competing with other top clubs.

If he doesn't feel like the club really wants him or would do what it takes to keep him long term, then I could imagine that seeping into his performances.

I don't think it's just that. The Spanish giants are the big draw for South Americans and always have been, if one of them come calling they'll 100% want out regardless, and Madrid have been sniffing for ages.
I agree, but if we were currently in the mix for the title I suspect you’d see a more committed Romero on the pitch even if he wanted to pursue a move to Madrid at season close.

Could be loads of potential reasons, and I'm only theorising myself. Been saying it since Ange came in that I don't think he's the best fit as a CB anyway for how we play and on top of that he's definitely not at the standard he was for what ever reason.

Once he settled (after initially looking way too rash) he was very good for us at a time when the team was poor. Now the team has the potential to be good he's turned to shit, and we're probably just looking to recoup our money now. It's just been a waste of 3 years it feels.

Who do we think will buy him?
Madrid don't buy many players his age these days and imo he isn't good enough for them
Barca broke
Bayern arguably have better players there but will they spend what spurs want?
Can't see any club in premier League buying him
PSG? Doubt they would go after him
Italian clubs don't have the cash
Atletico Madrid - they unexpectedly had a big outlay this summer, hard to see them having the cash for him

Ultimately I don't see any club willing to spend 60m+ for him so reckon we are stuck with him
Liverpool as a VVD replacement if contract isn't extended maybe?

Atletico as part of a swap deal for Gallacher - not sure I'd like it, but feasible?

Of all our players who have been sought after by the Madrids of the world, he's the most replaceable. Bale, Modric, Kane etc were all leading the team when they left, he's been unbelievably disappointing this season for me.

He's a very very good player, but I don't think he's irreplaceable like when we lost Bale or Kane. I think we'd have to look at a slightly different profile to balance out whet we were losing but I don't think it would be as difficult as some think, and I'd imagine we'd also have some change to spend elsewhere if we played it right.
Yeah I have been saying that we could sell him for a premium to Madrid and go and get Guehi (last year of his contract) and then use the rest of the money on another player.

When has Romero had an extended period of playing at the top of his game for us

from my perspective over his time here he’s had significant periods out injured, suspended or phoning it in because he was saving himself for Argentina and now apparently has had his head turned

Good player but says more about the lack of quality Center backs around these days that someone like Madrid are interested

Club shouldn't have let him go. Look at ask the England withdrawals this week. He should be recalled immediately but he won't be. I'm honestly kind of fine with Romero now

At least he should return to London now... and not be with Argentina... instead of returning late next week... or will he stay in South America ?... he probably will. 🙄

They play Peru on Wednesday, what's the bet he plays that game?
If he actually manages to get a move to Madrid (I honestly doubt they will buy him) there is no way they would put up with this sort of stuff.

Not sure how mad we can be to be honest. We played him Sunday when clearly he doesn't look 100%. He completed the full game too. So not sure we can then complain when Argentina also play him.

There is zero common sense when it comes to the Argentina FA and selection. Surely we’re used to that by now?
