Not a fan, but I maintain if we played two up top and rotated him and sonny as second strikers then he would get 20 goals a season and his lack of output elsewhere wouldn’t be so noticeable. Much like Sonny he is playing in a system that doesn’t suit him and is exposing his weakness’.

As you say yourself, neither is Johnson, yet he gets slated for not being a winger.

He is what he is. No point being annoyed that he isn't what he isn't. We would all love Salah on our right wing who does the lot but if they were that easy to come by every team would have one.
Based on the arguments here, salah would be lambasted for his work ethic...

Salah does so much more in possession though. Leagues apart in quality so seems a silly comparison. With Salah you're questioning an aspect of his game when the opponent has the ball. With Johnson you're questioning his involvement with and without the ball.

Funny you should say that, as this website does a bit of a stat by stat comparison between players

Johnson wins more ground duels than Salah, so you probably right there (but of course output/end product is much higher from Salah), think Salah has about 10 years on him as well.

Been around this so many times, different player/position/responsibility.

If anyone is happy for a winger or wing forward to just pop up with a few goals only, then thats alright. For others, that expect a bit more to the game, thats okay as wel, all be it, frustration is very loud.

The same could be said about Solanke in reverse - he should score more and I'm sure SOlanke himself would say the same, but he gets very little critisism because you can very clearly see the basic desire there on the pitch (this aspect is missing from Johnson).

What is frustrating, is this players basics - the lack of desire or fight when there is a ball to be won.

I would bet that most would be over the moon with him if he showed the effort/desire that the likes of Bergvall or Moore showed in games, without a doubt, but poor control, decisions and just blatantly bottling the ball on so many occassions isn't up to standard.
That sums up my view of the lad.
I like him and of course, I like his goals but whenever I watch him, he just frustrates me in how much of a pansy he is.

It's bloody hard to become a professional football, especially a top level one, so he must have desire and determination in him, he just needs to find it when he's on the pitch.

Maybe it's a maturity thing and he still feels like a kid out there?
Maybe it's confidence in himself?

I don't know but I'd love to see him get out and fight on the pitch, chase down every all, try to take players on, show us what he's made of.

He's still got time but he really needs to start showing that he belongs at this level soon.

Our delivery into the box from both flanks has been pretty abysmal for a very long time. Johnson is at least part of that problem. If nothing else he could improve his defensive game, track back more and put in a load more tackles.

We probably overpaid by about £10 million yeah but he certainly isn't an 'average squad player' - the guy is our top scorer.
This just shows the level we are at I suppose! We’ve only had one winger of an acceptable standard since Bale and that is Son. If we even had a player 1/2 the level of Son I would be happy with. However we signed players like Johnson and Sissoko as wingers despite their attributes. Shows how poor our scouting is and that we need to look at player technique and ability rather than number

That's why on the right I would play Kulusevski with Porro overlapping. He's the best crosser we have so he should stay wide.

They've made the game much more complex since Lineker was around and now we have var as well. The game is much different today than it was back then so pointless comparing a player of his time.
Although you're right in it being a different time, one would hope that nobody is seriously is directly comparing Brennan to Lineker as in player versus player, it's much more the fact that Lineker (supposedly) was goals and that was it. This has come about because Brennan is (again supposedly) only contributing goals.. And some people actually don't think that counts for much. yeah I know 😳

I think It's a general comparison, not a microscopic analysis, which actually, is SC's forte :woot:

Is this a huge long thread fueled by some people misunderstanding there is a difference between a wide forward (which Johnson is) and a winger (which he isn't)?.

We should try and sell him to Athletico Madrid for whatever we can get and cut our loses.

Put it toward Adeyemi or Mbeumo and Dibling.

So Offside did exist...

But in those days, inline was offside.
Yeah I meant to say var originally but just stuck it out  My point really is it seems silly to have to bring up a player from so long ago. The game is totally different now and we're also talking about a midfielder where you cant just pop up with goals and do not much else. A striker you can maybe get away with it but even then only if you're Haaland. We are far better for Solanke working hard up front. We're just not in a position to carry any passengers.
