He's useful enough for the squad but I'm really tired of how one entire wing is effectively neutralised by design because having him starting is the equivalent of taking a penalty box poacher and shoving him wide. He doesn't take on his full back because he has very little skill and dribbling ability. His only manner of getting an assist is having space to run into and pulling it across for the obvious tap in. Nothing actually creative or something he can conjure himself. If it were up to me he'd be the backup striker for Solanke and we play someone who can actually be involved in build up play which a winger should be.

Savinho is pretty much on the button for what you’re looking for, and have a look at his stats in arguably the strongest squad in the league compared To Johnson’s.

2 more assists on the board yesterday.

I do however think we need the opposite to play against certain opposition. A tricky winger who may not contribute much in terms of G/A but will be the player before the assist who opens things up for our attackers.

He did great for the first 15 minutes, but then it was almost like playing with 10 men as usual. I wouldn't play him anywhere else than up front in a two next to Solanke as a poacher/runner.

Agree with this. I like the guy, his goals are great, and he's a valuable member of the squad.

But as a starter, it comes down to a few key stats where he massively under delivers (and where he sits vs. peers on a percentile basis):
1) Shot creating actions: 6%
2) Passes attempted: 20%
3) Pass completion: 18%
4) Progressive passes: 23%
5) Successful take ons: 23%

That speaks to me of a player who
- isn't creative enough
- isn't on the ball for long enough
- doesn't create enough of a threat with ball at feet
- doesn't back himself when taking players on, or is aware it's a weakness

He's not doing enough as a winger, and that much is clear before any of the stats.

This doesn't mean that we need to sell, or that he's not a valuable squad member - he is, for sure. But he must be upgraded IMO.

You even compare those numbers to someone like Bowen, or Kudus - neither are sensational (and I've picked them deliberately for that reason), but (respectively):
1) 87%, 47%
2) 69%, 24%
3) 41%, 76%
4) 75%, 22%
5) 86%, 99%

Honestly, he wouldn't get in West Ham's side - that is a concern

Agree he is terrible and we very much overpaid for him. In essence he is a crap Theo Walcott that we spent lots of money on, when players like Kudus, Palmer, Gordon etc went for approx the same and are just so much better footballers. I’d wager you’d get more out of a youth team player on the wing.

I think this is a fair assessment. Stats aside and pretending to be David Pleat for a moment you can see during a game he just isnt involved enough.

Gets a significant percentage of our goals at the moment which seems to be getting him by but he is on the periphery of the game for lots of it and doesnt worry the opposition at all

Yea but apart from that?
He pressed well and was involved in multiple promising attacks - two of which resulted in goals.
That's despite being ill (the reason he almost went off at half-time, then was subbed in the 53rd minute, and also the reason that Ange almost didn't start him yesterday).

I feel like he's maybe just a second striker than a winger?? He's literally so poor out wide taking anyone on. He is basically a Spurs player through and through. He can do things well but is absolutely shite at what we need or needed. I reckon he would be better played up top some games. Sit in deep and counter. But that would mean tactics. We don't do that anymore

*1 more assist, which is 1 more than the 0 he was previously on.

It's such a tricky one with Johnson as he's almost the exact opposite of Timo Werner on the other wing.

If we could crush them together and put Werners pace and dribbling together with Johnsons eye for space and finishing at the far post we'd have a quality winger

The Tottenham Way podcast said that our win % when Johnson starts is awful compared to when he's been a sub. They didn't say what the percentages were unfortunately. I can't find them anywhere, anyone see them?

I think his a good impact sub but he nullifies a wing so you can’t get out, against Fulham he caused us to lose possession when we were trying to break out by not offering an out ball so our players had no one to pass to he does this to much!

I like the kid his got talent gets goals, he needs to kick the ball past people sometimes and use his pace

He's an ideal squad player that's been forced to play every game because we don't have any competition for him now we have moved Deki inside. Sign a dribbly bastard in January and the right hand side is sorted.
