Just do not understand why we're looking to spend big on this guy but not a central striker. Makes zero sense.

I hope we sign Johnson and I hope he does well. But imho it's severely underwhelming to lose Kane for £100m and sign a work-in-progress wide forward we're paying a huge premium for (vs his performance in the PL) because he's Welsh.

Yeah. I think at best we have done the minimum of what we should have been doing before selling Kane. Even before taking into account the Kane sale we have probably left ourselves a bit short. Taking into account the Kane sale, the window has been disappointing even if we buy Johnson. As things stand we are a Maddison or Romero injury away from looking pretty average imo.

I see Johnson as more of a speculative punt than anything else. I don’t think he comes in and automatically lifts the starting 11 to a new level. We’re gambling on his potential, the fact he’s young, homegrown and available at a transfer fee and wages we feel comfortable with. I’ll be pleased if we sign him but we should be doing more.

I hate to say I told you so, but I said it time and time again in the Kane thread that the money we were getting for him wouldn’t buy us much in today’s market.

People expecting a Bale summer type splurge were always going to be bitterly disappointed. It gets us one or two slightly above average players tops.

Are we even spending the Kane money though? Most of the business we have done feels like what we should have been doing anyway. Maddison, VDV etc. A new GK, CB, and AM bought at fairly low prices given the market was probably the minimum we needed to do before selling Kane.

we're splurging half the money for Kane on - for many - a wide forward who's hardly set the PL alight.

In reality the outlay must be much less than half when you take into account the (presumably) huge difference in salary.

I'm hoping he can be what Sadio Mane was supposed to be for us. Sometimes a player's level can improve by playing in a better team.

That's my hope anyway!
If anything he will be more like a Daniel Sturridge type player.

Just a note based on little knowledge of this actual deal or what Forest want or are prioritising.

Brentford's 43m bid was rejected but we don't know the payment schedule or terms. We have quite a lot of money available for us today as the Kane fee had a hefty up-front percentage. So most likely even if we were offering a similar amount to Brentford our terms might be better.

Totally agree. I understand that the top line figures quoted get swooped on but we have no idea what the guaranteed payments are for some of these bids or if the add-ons are easily achievable.

Case in point, Forest themselves with Morgan GW, huge overreaction to the over £40m top line price. The guaranteed part was £25m, £5m for staying up, so £30m in reality so far.

I don't have much to say on this player, which isn't unusual, but as I recall the only names I took away from Forest games last year were Aurier for obvious reasons, Gibbs white, but I'd already heard of him, and Brennan Johnson. I don't know why but I must assume he made an impression on me.

I'm very keen to get him in and think he will do very well but we really should have sorted out a new CF plus another CB

My boss at work is a Forest fan.
He said he expects him to come to us.
He said he is rapid, works hard, thinks he’ll do ok for us, but needs to improve his output, shot/final ball execution can be iffy, but thinks he can develop that in the right environment, which suggests to me it’s either decision making, or better players around him will lift him.

Personally I’m completely unfussed if we sign Johnson or not today. I know most disagree and that’s absolutely fine. Yes I do think our front line needs serious reinforcements but Johnson isn’t the required calibre for me. Would I be unhappy we signed him? No I wouldn’t but there would be a part of me thinking we maybe could and should have got better for the reasons you mention. I’ve never really been a fan of depth recruitment when your first 11 isn’t up to scratch. I know the HG issue is an issue but even so I’m not sure Johnson is the answer to that. Anyway, I hope he does well when he comes and I hope he brings some electricity to our attack. I will be supporting him 100% if/when he joins and will look forward to seeing what he can bring to the team.
Great post. Totally agree.

Why are we the only big team interested if he's that good? Even Everton, Villa, West Ham not sniffing around?

Has pace to burn but possibly a Great Championship player and not quite good enough for the Prem - certainly not the top 4-6!?
Exactly would rather we went and spent that money trying for Cole Palmer, looks a good prospect. Definitely not aiming high with Johnson’s potential signing. Very underwhelming after losing the worlds best striker. Wouldn’t see Liverpool losing salah and going for Johnson they’d be going for big names.
