He’s 25 years old and has hardly played any professional football. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure he is picking up a tidy wage and living a good life. But mate come on have some ambition to actually play the game.

Always amazes me that there are prem goal keepers who go their whole career without playing. Why not eh…

To be fair, maybe he's just doing what most of us do. Find a job you can do for good money, is comfortable and in a lovely work environment, and just squat on it as long as you can if they want to keep paying you. Just a job after all, and no position in football more like a job I would imagine than a depth/HG goalkeeper.

I would say - take a look at the comments on social media for the players who do play - and then compare that to the comments for the back-up, or 3rd string keeper.

He is living the good life, with minimal stress.

Didn’t realise he was 25! I don’t mind a home grown player being the backup keeper, it’s a risk I’m happy to take.

Given the second and third choice keepers get such little game time most of the time, seems silly to waste a non-HG spot for one of them

Probably on about £5k a week, which in footballing terms is a pittance, but to most its an unbelievable amount of money. He's just guaranteed himself about £1m, and like others have said plays football everyday with minimal stress.

If you read the article on the first page of this thread it's a thing that clubs try to have a goalkeeper who hasn't played much so they can still opt for an emergency loan of a good keeper if the situation arises.

If we went into next season and heavens forbid got an injury to both Forster and Vicario. I think we'd still be able to register another keeper after the window closed. Then you'd have the option of someone like De Gea who is without a club

Tricky one, on one hand it’s great to use up a HG spot on a player who may play 2/3 times a season. On the other hand however if Vicario is out for 3/4 months after the first couple of games then not having an adequate back up can really destroy your season.

Completely forgot De Gea still doesn’t have a club. Suppose that shows you why Austin may have decide to stay and lacked the perceived ambition to go out and leave. Unlike outfield players there are a smaller number of goalkeeper spots in squads available. If he’s happy being the 3rd choice keeper then I don’t blame him.

Forster is 36 now so there is a chance Austin will be the 2nd choice keeper this season.

That's absolutely the case I think.
People were saying for years why doesn't Andreiy Lunin leave Real Madrid since he's very good and could be first choice most places despite Real Madrid having Courtouis and bringing Kepa on loan in this year.
But he stayed, he got a chance, and it's quite possible he'll play the UCL final after an impressive second half of the season

He’s on more than 5k a week I imagine.

We don’t even know if Austin is any good. How many competitive games has he played. Really wouldn’t want to rely on him for a few PL games in a row. Talk about players happy to sit on the bench, he’s happy to sit in the stand. Serious lack of ambition.

He probably won’t go out on loan but if I was the club I’d want him to go out on loan to an English team this season. I think you’re right about about relying on him long term as our back up keeper. But we’ve given him the five year deal so why we still have Forster for one more season to be our back up let him go out on loan. Get some experience and then come back and replace Forster as the back up to Vicario.

I haven’t the slightest idea how he warrants a 5 yr contract. Possibly they have had some interest and want to get some sort of fee for him. I’m always nervous of possibly relying on Forster to be honest. Burnley reserve, Muric, is better. I know he makes some mistakes but we are playing with fire not having a good back up keeper. We left ourselves short when we sold Sanchez and paid the price.

Keeping Forster as our number 2 is a massive risk that will probably bite us in the arse.

I know there's bigger priorities but I was under the impression a new number 2 who has the same style as Vic would be coming in.

Unless of course, they believe Austin is.

I would guess they view Austin as the number 2. Otherwise why give him a 5 year deal? I’m sure you could have given him a shorter on

Forster is a decent enough keeper for the no2 slot and a big presence in the changing room by all accounts.
I don’t see it as any different to Scott Carson who has just signed a new contract and is on £30k a week.
I think it’s good to have a few experienced heads in the group, especially with such a young group like ours.

Me personally, I don't think he can be any worse than Forster

But no choice Ange picks him, I don't think he is bold enough

Depends. If, and I say this because I want to have faith in the big man, we have a few calamitous performances, then Ange will have no choice but to give Austin or Whiteman a go.
